Okay! I found a 2007 update for BDesigner WITH SONY READER output. It works great! Problems solved!

Thanks again for the help, everyone!

EDIT: one more question, in Reader and Connect, the authors are displayed by the first letter of their FIRST name? Any way to change that to first letter/last name?

thanks.

Sure! Enter the author's name into the meta-data in Lastname, Firstname format.

Ah! But what about the books I bought? It seems like I can't open the BBeB books I got through Connect another way...

I'm afraid you're just stuck with those the way they are. It seems that Sony want us to catalogue authors by their first names .

That earlier in this thread mentioned update for bookdesigner is not newest update. I am using one from 4 days ago that contains some new features for sony reader users.

BookDesigner website (Russian):

I didn't think that worked for Sony's DRMed books ....

Thanks, jriihi! My Russian is pretty non-existent, so I'm lost on the BD site.

the way that I have found to insert the title and author in an RTF is to open the file in notepad and insert {\info{\title this is the title}{\author me}}

Then the title will be displayed in the reader as: this is the title
and the author as: me

That's the way I process mine, jpchan. I like to run the RTFs through WordPad to scrape off all the slimey M$Word Bloatage, but WordPad strips off the meta-data, so I just go back into the file in NotePad and add it back in -- the insertion point (the line before the one that has "{\*\generator" in it) is easer to find after WordPad does its slimming down too.

That's basically what the "File/Properties" dialog in Word does .

Hi Nat,

I always download my Baen books as RTF, as you know, and I've found that when I load them into Word, do my standard processing (bump up the font size, set the author and title) then re-save, the file is very often considerably smaller than it was originally. I don't think Word's RTF is too awful .

Really? Hmmm. Mine tend to increase in size by 10%~30% (one almost doubled, and it was several MB to begin with), depending on I haven't the slightest idea what.

Maybe it's the version of Word? That doesn't really make sense though....

Anyway, if I can figure out how to make BookDesigner accept my font and font size choices (I haven't played with it much yet, but it seems pretty determined to only output its defaults), I think I'm fairly likely to start putting my files into LRF for reading on the Reader. Then it wouldn't matter much, 'cause I'd just zip up the originals and go on with my life.
