Nothing like the thankless job of being a mod... aaah, all those great messages from people begging you to do things or pleading their case against another person who has also pleaded their case

(and the subsequent hate mail from both of them after you've turfed them both out).

Not to mention people telling you can't ban them, and that you have to do exactly what they want, otherwise the forum will wither and die

Hmmm. There are people who actually can do this: if you ban them, the forum dies. However, they're usually people who won't point out that fact, but the admin/mod knows that there is a certain clique of core users you can't touch. In our forum they have a forum for themselves. We call them the intelligentsia

Up to a point - some forums are just so massive that they lose their impact, sure you might get some temporary death in a section but the whole forum won't die.

RCGroups has about 330,000 people (~16 million posts) so it has long since gone past the point of death-by-individual.

That said, certainly on smaller forums it can be fatal as you say.
