The JVM is not an Open Source product but a commercially licensed and Sun certified JVM. This also means that there will be a licensing agreement with Sun.

The Wonka/Mika JVM is too limited for Mobipocket. Probably Kaffe would work, but performance is expected to be sub-optimal.

Thanks for the info, Matthijs. Hopefully this commercial product will have good stability and support.

Will I then be correct to assume that most java applications should run with minimal effort required? A commercially support JVM is indeed good to hear.

Much though I love my Iliad and have found Irex to be quite good (since I'm not techie) when they use the word "soon" my heart just sinks

(I am in Ireland, it would have been great to spend this holiday weekend reading mindless junk on my Iliad )

Very nice! That should make writing and porting applications a lot easier! (And, if you're lucky, porting will not even be necessary!)

Does this mean that it will be version JDK 1.6?

Well, it is probably wildly optimistic, but iRex is attending a book conference in France. And the Amazon company Mobipocket is based in France.

What a great time for an announcement ;-)
