I'm not saying that the Kindle isn't easy on the eye; the opposite, in fact. My only issue is the amount of light needed to read comfortably - in comparison to books, not to other backlit devices. I was, and am, aware of the difference.

I used to prefer reading on my backlit iPhone for low-light settings but since getting the lighted cover for the Kindle - it's really just reading on the Kindle all the time now because having that light there is so handy.
My favourite thing is to read outdoors or read in our bay window because the Kindle screen with good natural light just rocks - the grey background appears to become much whiter with good sunlight while the text stays very dark. |

And, yes, the first couple of days or weeks can be unnerving to someone who has become so used to glaring white backgrounds. Give it a few more weeks and I think you'll find that reading becomes 'natural-feeling' to you. As for news, well, get yourself an iPad. And don't short yourself by going 7", spring for the original iPad-the most expensive one. Then take it outside on a nice, bright, sunny day and read your newspapers and magazines to your heart's content. ![]() Derek |

I'm happy with my Kindle. I can read fine on it. I love that I can change the font to something larger and easier to see.

Nine,
Is the newspaper and magazine content on the ipad version as limited as that of the kindle? I love my kindle, but that aspect is very disappointing for me as well. Shirley |

I can't speak for the iPad, but on the Android platform, you can either use a web browser to read any paper that has a web presence, or use an app, which does have similiar limitations to the Kindle. But that's a difference: you have a choice.

OP, I agree with you. It's quite hard to read on kindle 3 unless you have a lot of sunlight. I also feel the contrast is a bit too dark, it'd be nice if there was some way to lighten it up a bit. I've tried several font sizes and angles but get the same difficult to read feeling. I think Amazon will probably be able to improve on this with software updates.

I'm sorry your so unhappy with the screen as it is the best eInk display I've seen yet. Maybe sizing the font as other have suggested will help.

I'd played with a few different e-ink devices in the stores before I got my Kindle, so I'd already gotten over the difference in screen color and contrast between e-ink and reading on my phone.
The one thing I wasn't prepared for, however, was the lack of backlighting. Subconsciously I knew my K3 wasn't backlit, but that didn't dampen my surprise the first night I pulled out my K3 in bed with my sweetie sleeping beside me. The next day, I went back to Target and bought the lighted cover. |
