I'm taking the next week off of work other than Tuesday afternoon, so I'm hoping to get a lot of reading done. It's the last month for a challenge I was working on in 2020 that I got behind on. Won't fully finish it since it's a lot, but it's fun. I'm trying to read a lot of mysteries this month but keep getting distracted by other genres. That always happens to me - I pre-plan, but am a mood reader.

This one was slow going and continues on in the next in series. Writing was competent but not much happened and when something did there was little drama or suspense. Multiple storylines. One big honking convenience near the end

Currently reading What Abigail Did That Summer, by Ben Aaronovitch. Not at all "Peter", this is all about Abigail, as you might suppose from the title. Told in the first person, with a personal narrative that some older, white, priviledged folks might take a bit of getting in to. But once you let it flow over you, and get stuck in, it's just fine. Another book that I think could have been very successful as an audio book, but unfortunately it isn't available in North America. At least not yet.

3.5/5 for Ben Bova's Powersat - by the end it was less Wilbur Smith, more Tom Clancy. Prhaps it's because there was very little fiction about the science that it came across as another tale of US derring do vs evil Ay-rab terrorists. Not awful, but not what I was expecting. REALLY hope Mars is better.

1/3 through Bova's Mars and it really is a MUCH better book than Powersat. Both the science and the politcking are more more interesting, and better handled. The only constant little niggle is the way the Navajo/Anglo main character is constantly using Spanish expressions like "muchas gracias" and "adiós" when talking to the Brazilian scientist he's smitten with. He (and the author) should be smarter than that

The Cook of the Halcyon is the last Montalbano book to be translated to English. Unfortunately it doesn't wrap up the series. From what I can gather it was originally written earlier as a movie script, then rewritten when that deal fell through. So we're left with no follow up to the way things were left at the end of The Sicilian Method, a bit of a disappointment.
Almost done with Maigret now too after Maigret in Vichy, another one done from a refreshing viewpoint, I'm not expecting a definitive finale for Maigret given the way the timeline has jumped around (e.g. into then back out of retirement) but we'll see. |

Grrrr! Bova's Mars is a great read, but if I was irked by a wannabe lover using Spanish when talking to a Brazilian, I head-desked when the Brazilian spoke to herself in Spanish!

So it was just lazy writing on Bova's part, because a few pages further on, the character's father

Bird Box by Josh Malerman. A horror apocalypse, it's not safe to go outside without a blindfold. Told in two threads, current and four years previously, and these are so cleverly constructed that the tension is unrelenting; I felt quite drained when I put it down. Certainly there are holes in the story but you never get time to think about them. All up, I thought this was very well done, although I'm a little ambivalent about the ending. A firm 4/5.
Do You Dream Of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh. In an alternative history some young adults get picked for a 23 year journey to another planet. I really wanted to like this, and for the first quarter or so I did, mostly, although I was starting to wonder if they'd ever get off Terra-One. But the middle third/half of the book really dragged - I mean really - and certain aspects of the end became quickly apparent. Plus there were a lot of things that jarred so that the unsatisfying conclusion was merely the final straw of disappointment. (The very last sentence, in the context of the book, was actually quite disturbing, which is perhaps the most interesting aspect of the book, although I'm guessing it was unintended.) On the other hand, I did actually finish it, so 2/5. |
