I had some kind of Japanese whiskey when I was a young very dumb soldier. I know it came from the class 6 store, the military is kind of like that, they'll stock ethnic foods to keep the war brides happy. Back to the whiskey. .. I'm pretty sure we were doing German shots followed by Japanese shots. I think there may have even been some Ouzo thrown in for good measure.

All I'm really certain of is that I probably lost some layers of my stomach lining and probably 9 years off my life

There are, in fact, some pretty decent "scotch" whiskies being made in Japan, or so I'm told. But none I've actually tried, so can't give a report. Fortunately, I still have my Talisker Storm here, and I'm enjoying a glass of it right now.

A glass of milk and some Pepperidge Farm cookies to settle my nerves. Had a miserable drive (should have been 8 hours, wound up being more than 11.5) -- especially the part about driving 20 to 30 mph, single file, through driving snow on the as-yet unplowed NY Thruway extension and Mass. Pike in the Berkshires My knuckles are still white.

Ugly, scary stuff. And totally exhausting. Now I admit, milk and cookies wouldn't be my first response (Lagavulin comes to mind), but I can see the appeal.

Lin2412, you are welcome to you very sweet drink. I don't want to drink it either, but you are welcome to it!

PS I bought a Pu-ErH sampler box because of you people. I hated every one of them!
Hello! Thanks. Hahaha. Don't worry I'm not taking any offense at all. You guys weren't the only ones who hated on the butterfinger and coffee mix. My friends used to pick on me for that and when I told them they should at least try it, they hated it and picked on me even more. It's not as if they didn't have weird tastes either. They dip bananas in powdered milk and find it extremely delicious. lol

I love teas! I haven't tried Pu erh or lapsong though. Japanese Matcha green tea is my favorite, but a friend recently sent me a Malaysian Tea called "Teh Tarik" and I loved it. I would really prefer teas or milk teas over soft-drinks any day.

Teh Tarik is so ubiquitous in Malaysia and S'pore that when I ask for a cup of plain black tea they look at me like I have three heads! They can't fathom why anyone would drink tea without at least half a glass of sweetened condensed milk added to it and frothed up! Tasty stuff, but too sweet for me to drink more than once or twice a year.

It's SOOO common that when you stop at a highway rest area/restaurant/bus stop, the restaurant staff have already filled trays full of glasses half-filled with sweetened condensed milk, stacking the trays 5-6 high, so when a long-distance bus pulls in, they can serve the teh tarik very quickly.... Pour in the tea, pour it back and forth twice, and serve!

The 2015 World Whisky Bible actually rated a Japanese whisky the best in the world about a month ago.

Quote:
Whisky expert Jim Murray described the Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 as a drink of “near incredible genius”, awarding it 97.5 marks out of 100 in the 2015 World Whisky Bible.
Yamazaki is owned by Suntory.

Yes, Yamazaki does have a good reputation. But "owned" by Suntory is different than labeled 'Suntory.' The Yamazaki distillery was about three kilometers from my house, right on the Osaka/Kyoto border, but regular 'Suntory' is made in a different location in northern Osaka. I'm not a Scotch drinker, but in 15 years living in Japan, I never met anyone who could drink the Suntory Scotch. Logic says there must be someone who buys it, but I never met one. I do know from personal experience that the Suntory rum is better used to fuel Zippo lighters.

Unfortunately, Yamazaki is not available in British Columbia. In fact, there is only one Japanese brand available here, and given the pricing of it, I think I'll pass.
