I understand, I just asked here as I put a lot of weight in the experience I have had using this forum so far. As I am sure you update the original post of this thread when necessary, I will stick with the advice in same, and go for a Kindle PW3 with firmware version no higher than 5.8.7.0.1.

Regarding getting my hands on one, do you know if most people message each seller individually, on say eBay before purchase, or just pick one up, either second hand or new, and wait however long it takes until their is a jailbreak available for the version their Kindle PW3 comes with?

The 5.*.*(.*).1 versions that come with now selling brand new Kindles all seem to allow a single downgrade via a FB02 type bin file, as long as they've never ever been connected to the internet.

What model? There are more than one 8th. generation (marketing term) devices.
Use the first six characters of the serial number shown on the "Device Info" panel under settings menu and this table:

Then update both your information box on the left and your post with that information.

I recently received a PW3 (G090G1), with 5.8.10.1 fw. I know jailbreak would not be available on this device, but I saw some people on this forum who were able to downgrade with this specific firmware: my PW3 was european too, so I thought I could give it a try. I put the 5.7.4 bin in the root, then I rebooted the Kindle: it automatically started updating. When finished, it rebooted again: but the device was bricked. Problem is that I found it too late. I used the DO_FACTORY_RESET method, and my Kindle mass storage became, indeed, unreadable. Now, this is not a problem for me: Amazon will deliver a substitute Kindle in 48 hours. It's just that now I wouldn't want to brick another Kindle.

So I ask you: did I do something which directly caused the jailbreak?
I read that 5.xx.xx.1 models can do a single downgrade, if they have never been connected to the internet. Problem is that I had already registered my Kindle, and I had also successfully installed the voiceview image (I read this indicated that the Kindle could be jailbroken). So I did not follow reports closely enough, because I didn't believe I would brick.

I did that already, as I mentioned in my post.
It made the Kindle's mass storage unreadable.

EDIT: I misspelled the name. I followed a guide however, so I did write RESTORE.
