And thank heaven for that, not being bilingual, during my frequent trips to Rota in a previous life, I was able to function (barely) because most of the locals spoke some degree of Spanglish.

My SO is essentially bi-lingual in English and Spanish, She would have extended conversations with a Puerto Rican woman who worked at the laundromat close by when she did the laundry, and they would shift between English and Spanish, often not even consciously aware they had done so. They were simply talking. But the shifts came at the boundaries of syntactic units. Complete thoughts were expressed in one language before shifting to another, and you didn't get the patois or pidgin that occurs when intersecting cultures devise a trade language in with both can communicate. There was nothing like Spanglish. A correspondent elsewhere is Hispanic, and talked about a relative who did freely intermix Spanish and English words in sentences, and it drove him nuts because he never knew what to expect when she opened her mouth, and comprehension was far more difficult. ______ Dennis Last edited by DMcCunney; 02-09-2017 at 07:38 PM. |

Years back, I had dinner in a restaurant near me, and overheard a patron from Spain who spoke Spanish as it was spoken in Castile telling a Mexican restaurant employee "I'll teach you how to speak Spanish!". I did not see that ending well... ![]() ______ Dennis |

Same with a lady from Argentina. She was hard to understand. I think in all the years I knew her, she spoke one English sentence. Well technically it was 3 sentences. I couldn't come back with an argument in any language. She took something of mine. Her response was you left I like I keep. |

I had much the same problem is Scotland. Being a non bilingual (American) English speaker I frequently had to ask the Scotts to please speak more slowly and distinctly.

That is funny. When I went to Scotland I had no issue understanding them, even from the various parts of Scotland. But I understand what you mean. One morning there were some Germans during breakfast who just didn't understand the patron. It was hilarious, especially because I understood what both sides were saying. After about five minutes I decided to help them out, as I was feeling sorry for both sides.

LOOOL... I've always thought so as well. I've always felt French is a somewhat nasal sounding language, and my French teacher back in high school had a nasal voice himself. So... it sounded like a deflating balloon that's being chocked. (You know, you first inflate it, then you stretch the neck, and it goes like "whèèèieeèèè...")
