Better info here: How It Works and FAQ.

You pay $5 a month for the privilege of getting a discount on purchases (50 percent for first book each month, then 40 percent); most books are downloadable to PC (they'll show a download button), otherwise must be streamed or downloaded to a mobile device.

I think I'm going to give the 30-day free trial a try. There's one book I was planning on getting today from Audible that I see they're offering.

If you do the 30-day trial don't forget to check the "free premium" section. They've got some Jack Reacher shorts and others I recognize. I'm really bothered by the some DRM, some not part. It makes me leery about even trying.

How idiotic. When I typed in the URL, I got a page with a bright red banner on the first screen about the club. Lots of information, in light gray color, was on the second screen after scrolling down. Then I kept getting redirected to another AudiobooksNow webpage which didn't have the information. I haven't been able to get back to the plain audiobooknow.com webpage. That's a great way to get new book club business.

The DRM is obvious, though--at least if you're accessing the site from a computer. The info page for a book should have a Downloadable button--which means it's not DRMed. When you click on that button, you get a popup that tells you that specifically.

Spoiler:
DRM Free (Downloadable from Website)
Audiobooks marked as Downloadable means you can download these titles directly from our website. These titles are DRM-free which means you can download the MP3 audio files and transfer them to any of your devices for personal uses. Copyright laws still apply to these files and you are prohibited from sharing them with others in any way. Over 95% of AudiobooksNow's digital audiobooks are DRM-free.

DRM Protected
Audiobooks marked as DRM Protected have DRM (Digital Rights Management) installed which means you cannot download the raw MP3 audio files. DRM Protection is mandated by the publisher. Less than 5% of AudiobooksNow's digital audiobooks are DRM Protected. However, all of our digital audiobooks are downloadable to any of our free apps.

I only checked the one title I was planning to buy, but they say the vast majority of their books are non-DRM.

I did look at the free premium section--not much I was interested in; I noticed some shorts I already got free from Audible and/or audiobooks.org in the past. But, yes, a decent number of recognizable authors at least.

So it seems worth a free trial.

A-ha! I don't know how I missed that. I checked a dozen or so titles and all of them were DRM-free. That makes giving it a try worthwhile.

Well, it appears that there is still going to be a magazine, but it will keep the name "AudioFile." I just got an email from them a few minutes ago.

You might want to go to their homepage and give it a look-see. It might be something that you might be interested in. Click on "Subscribe" on the menu near the top of the page and you'll get several choices. One is for their newsletter. There is also a link to subscribe to AudioFile.

All that I've been getting have been the newsletters. In fact, it was in a newsletter from them that I learned about AudiobooksNow (I'm beginning to wonder now if they are part of the same company or if the two just have a working relationship with each other).

Some of you probably eschew email newsletters. Personally, I sign up for just about any newsletter offer that I run across, related to ebooks, audiobooks, and other media. They are a great source of information about discounts, markdowns, and freebies. And, I don't know about you, but if companies want to tell me about something of value that they're giving away free, I am happy to listen to them.

$11.99 -- A Season for Tending -- Cindy Woodsmall/ Stina Nielsen --> 12.1 hrs/ R-4.5 --> romance

Quote:
A Season for Tending --> Amish Vines and Orchards Series (book 1 of 4)

Whispersync: Audible ($4.49) | Kindle ($11.99)

Old Order Amish Rhoda Byler’s unusual gift and her remarkable abilities to grow herbs and berries have caused many to think her odd. As rumors mount that Rhoda’s "gift" is a detriment to the community, she chooses isolation, spending her time in her fruit garden and on her thriving canning business.

Miles away in Harvest Mills, Samuel King struggles to keep his family’s apple orchard profitable. As the eldest son, Samuel, farms with his brothers, the irrepressible Jacob and brash Eli, while his longtime girlfriend, Catherine, remains hopeful that Samuel will marry her when he feels financially stable. Meanwhile, Samuel’s younger sister, Leah, is testing all the boundaries during her Rumschpringe, and finds herself far from home in Rhoda’s garden after a night of partying gone badly. But Leah’s poor choices serve as a bridge between Rhoda and the King family when a tragic mistake in the orchard leaves Samuel searching for solutions.

Rhoda’s expertise in canning could be the answer, but she struggles with guilt over the tragic death of her sister and doesn’t trust herself outside her garden walls. As the lines between business, love, and family begin to blur, can Rhoda finally open up to a new life? And what effect will this odd, amazing woman have on the entire King family?

Audible Channels -- Featured Free Audiobook -- Prime & streaming only

Today's selection comes from the Truly Criminal channel:

FREE -- Catch Me If You Can -- Frank Abagnale/ Barrett Whitener --> 8.6 hrs/ R-4.2 --> memoir

Quote:
Whispersync: no deals at this time | Audible

Frank W. Abagnale, alias Frank Williams, Robert Conrad, Frank Adams, and Robert Monjo, was one of the most daring conmen, forgers, imposters, and escape artists in history. In his brief but notorious criminal career, Abagnale donned a pilot's uniform and copiloted a Pan Am jet, masqueraded as the supervising resident of a hospital, practiced law without a license, passed himself off as a college sociology professor, and cashed over $2.5 million in forged checks, all before he was 21. Known by the police of 26 foreign countries and all 50 states as "The Skywayman," Abagnale lived a sumptuous life on the lam - until the law caught up with him. Now recognized as the nation's leading authority on financial foul play, Abagnale is a charming rogue whose hilarious, stranger-than-fiction international escapades and ingenious escapes - including one from an airplane - make Catch Me If You Can an irresistible tale of deceit. It's also a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.
How do I listen to this? -- You have free streaming access to this audiobook with Audible Channels for Prime. To start listening, download the free Audible app, sign in with your Amazon account, and browse Prime Exclusive Audiobooks within the Channels tab.

Note: Android, iOS & Win 10 apps only -- offline listening NOT allowed. This is a new daily feature I'm adding to bring added awareness for this program. Audible has nothing to do with this.

The Magician's Elephant

Whispersync: Audible ($0.99) | Kindle ($4.84)

When a fortuneteller’s tent appears in the market square of the city of Baltese, orphan Peter Augustus Duchene knows the questions that he needs to ask: Does his sister still live? And if so, how can he find her?

The fortuneteller’s mysterious answer (An elephant! An elephant will lead him there!) sets off a chain of events so remarkable, so impossible, that Peter can hardly dare to believe it.

But it is - all of it - true.

Firstlife --> Everlife Series (book 1 of 2)

Whispersync: Audible ($6.49) | Kindle ($8.74)

Firstlife, an Everlife Novel

ONE CHOICE.

TWO REALMS.

NO SECOND CHANCE.

Tenley "Ten" Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl…who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she'll live—after she dies.

There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she's drawn to isn't where the boy she's falling for lives? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…
