Good morning, everyone! Historic day today... The start of France's Reign of Terror in 1793. It only lasted 10 months, but Madam DeFarge managed to knit several nice sweaters. On a happier note, the Voyager space craft, America's first contribution to space junk is still winging its way towards the Klingon Empire. It's a good day for old memories. My oldest memory is being given a big chunk of Bologna, cut from a large hanging sausage in a corner grocery store when accompanying my mother on a day's shopping trip. I must have been 3 or 4 at the time. I loved bologna in those days! Charlie, what is your own 'oldest' memory?

I have some unbranded Keemun tea in my cup this morning. I'm so glad that I was able to buy a large supply of this tea. It really is delicious! And now... down to visit the Food Lady!

Thanks, all. It was a low key day, with lots of hustling around because my DW's Uncle died last weekend and she's going to drive to Carson City tomorrow. He was more father than uncle, and one of the good people in the world. IAC, a minor victory at work yesterday (was supposed to be a day off, but an emergency intervened. And was quickly resolved, remotely.) But other than that, relaxing. Today, some work and some goof off. I've got my hours in for the week regardless.

Good morning, everyone! It's finally Saturday... the 5th Saturday since I ruptured my bicep tendon, and I declare myself healed! The Ortho said 4-6 weeks, this is 5 weeks... and I refuse to sit on the sidelines any longer! We've had a visitor to the club for the past few weeks, a young (and VERY pretty) collegiate fencer from Michigan who's been beating the pants off everyone in the club in both foil and epe'e, and I've been champing at the bit for my chance to face her myself. Today's the day! She returns to the States on Monday with fond memories of Thailand and the Chiang Mai Fencing Club, and a couple of club T-shirts, and hopefully, at least one defeat on the piste!

With that in mind, I'm fortifying myself with East India Company's "Royal Breakfast" tea and a couple of Super-duper Energy Bars. These things have more zip than Crystal Meth!

I make 'em myself. It's not particularly difficult. You can find recipes online for high-altitude cold-weather mountaineering snack foods, pick the flavors you like best and blend them together.

Well... I strapped on a double layer of Ace bandage over my arm, and then couldn't fit it through my plastron (under-jacket protector) so I had to settle for a single elastic bandage, but that seemed to do the trick. As in any good battle, psychology helps, so when she was discussing what competitions we had available here in Thailand, and the Fencing Master told her that I was the Silver medalist in the Royal Thai Open International, I stepped up, smiled, and quietly requested that she not cry when I beat her, walked away and continued putting on my equipment... My psychology degree finally put to good use!
Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill.

... but dammit... I had to work for it! Final scores were 5-4 in extended overtime in foil, 5-4 in extended overtime in epe'e. But I couldn't take the hat trick; she beat me 5-4 in out last bout with epe'e, with some of the smoothest attacks I've seen in a long time. (She quietly requested that I not cry... I asked if it was OK to whimper?) She's just 21 years old and only been fencing for the past 3 years. Give her another few years and she will be unstoppable!

I probably set back the healing of my arm another 3-4 weeks, and by our last bout I was having trouble holding it up, but it was worth every second to have the chance to fence against her! This girl is going to make a name for herself in the Fencing world!

As for pictures... sorry. But imagine; tall and slim, Chinese ancestry, bright white teeth, flashing eyes, smiling pixieish expression on her face, and a delightful personality. We are all looking forward to next summer when she plans to return to Chiang Mai. With another year under her belt, the only way I'll be able to defeat her will be if I can find Excalibur!
