Just over halfway through The Conjurer's Bird now and really enjoying it. A definite win for StoryGraph's recommendation algorithm.

I've just started Cuba Libre!: Che, Fidel, and the Improbable Revolution That Changed World History by Tony Perrottet. In the intro he writes about Fidel's appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958, before the revolution. He was welcomed and apparently was a folk hero in those days. I was 7 then and either missed it, or it didn't make an impression. I did not know much about Che before I saw The Motorcycle Diaries.

4.25/5 on StoryGraph for The Conjurer's Bird, A fascinating tale spun from the tiniest fragments of fact. Told with such warmth and empathy that I wish it were true. Time to unwind with some C-Drama before deciding what to start next from my StoryGraph generated TBR

But The Power Broker IS an e-book now. But it's too expensive for me.

Don't Dare a Dame by M. Ruth Myers. Third in the Maggie Sullivan detective series set in Dayton, OH from 1930s into WW II. I bought the compendium of the first four books as being cheaper than individually.

Unfortunately there's a lot of people who know all the wrong and inaccurate things about Che Guevara. Not at all a heroic person.

This was readable and a little entertaining despite the 274 dei ex machina. The little mystery plot added to my interest in completing this. Rated D+ [2 stars].

This was OK. A bit too much detail on recent centuries, and at least one common fallacy gone uncorrected (the murdered archbishop was Thomas Becket, not Thomas à Becket). Far too little on the crimes of empire and slavery, but perhaps excused because of the concentration on England itself.

Next I read another random choice, Odd Interlude by Dean Koontz. Written after the main series, but set during it, it doesn't affect the later stories, nor is it referenced by them. An interlude indeed. Enjoyable, although introducing even more weirdness into Odd Thomas's already weird universe.

Next up: The Last Emperox by John Scalzi. The last volume of his Collapsing Empire trilogy, which I recently got on special offer.

I finished Hari Kunzru's The Impressionist - a tough read with some thought-provoking things to say. Back to "The Big Book of Female Detectives" now and Christie's first Tommy and Tuppy novel, "The Secret Adversary". Nice and light after the wringer Kunzru put me through

I'm well into my Halloween reading now. Currently on The Traveling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon. Looking good so far.
