£2.99 -- Hitler -- Ian Kershaw/ Damian Lynch --> 44.1 hrs/ R-4.6 --> biography

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible (£2.99) | Kindle (£9.99)

Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness.

From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century.

Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the character of the bizarre misfit in his 30-year ascent from a Viennese shelter for the indigent to uncontested rule over the German nation that had tried and rejected democracy in the crippling aftermath of World War I. With extraordinary vividness, Kershaw recreates the settings that made Hitler's rise possible: the virulent anti-Semitism of prewar Vienna, the crucible of a war with immense casualties, the toxic nationalism that gripped Bavaria in the 1920s, the undermining of the Weimar Republic by extremists of the Right and the Left and the hysteria that accompanied Hitler's seizure of power in 1933 and then mounted in brutal attacks by his storm troopers on Jews and others condemned as enemies of the Aryan race.

In an account drawing on many previously untapped sources, Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a "drummer" sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of an infamous failed putsch and, ultimately, to the leadership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing parties fused into a movement that enthralled the German people.

I used to do the same for fiction ebooks and audiobooks, and occasionally I'll still do it. But I had to cut back on my time on here, so fiction was the first thing to be thrown overboard, since I do not like fiction.

Thanks TM. Everyone send him karma, even though he says that it doesn't mean that much to him.
You're welcome. I appreciate that. Sorry, I missed this post and for the delayed response.

The most obvious source is your public library. Granted, it's only a rental, but it's free nonetheless.

Several sources to follow for matching Whispersync pairs are:And don't forget to follow the Audible Daily Deal for non-fiction deals that appear frequently. The advantage here is that you don't need to buy or borrow the matching Kindle book to get low pricing like you do for Whispersync deals.

Ha. I'm flattered, and embarrassed. Embarrassed because I haven't done very much of that lately.

I was running down some of your sources and happened upon an Amazon webpage that is of ebooks with Audible narration for $3.99 or less. I don't remember hearing or seeing anything about that before (but knowing your thoroughness and efficiency, it's probably on the O.P. somewhere right now), but that might be a good, steady source of non-fiction bargains. You can sort the ebooks by price, so if you do a low to high sort you can approximate how much the Whispersync deal will cost you (cost of the book + no more than $3.99).

There are currently 177 (shouldn't there be more than that?) of them. Unfortunately, I see no way to sort them by genre. However, the adage "you can't judge a book by its cover" is rarely true with ebooks or with physical books which have book jackets (basically all of them, except for ones that you'd pick up at a thrift store or some place like that). Most of the time, you can tell whether or not the ebook is fiction or non-fiction by the cover. So, it's not that bad of an experience to scan down the list until you find one that looks non-fiction-ist.

I'll try to do more posts of non-fiction audiobooks. I just didn't see any today (well, yesterday, Sunday) that met my criteria*. I've been spending way too much time on the Media thread lately, so I want to trim that down. Maybe that will give me more time for huntin' audiobook bargains.

*My criteria includes: rating of at least 4.0 stars from at least 20 reviews at Amazon; low price of the WS deal (I try to keep them under $6); relatively high price of the audio at Audible (making the percentage discount to the audio alone at Audible higher, which translates into the WS deal being better), I like big bang for the buck, so an ebook that is unusually long (therefore, making the audio longer) catches my eye. But sometimes I fudge a little bit on one or more of these criteria.

Ha, you scooped me on this one. I looked at the OP and it wasn't specifically linked, so I added it to the listings. Thanks for the catch.

$4.99 -- Toltec Art of Life & Death -- Don Ruiz, et al/ C Barillas --> 14.1 hrs/ R-4.3 --> spirituality

Quote:
The Toltec Art of Life and Death

Whispersync: Audible ($8.49) | Kindle ($14.99)

The beloved teacher of spiritual wisdom and author of the phenomenal New York Times and international bestseller The Four Agreements takes readers on a mystical Toltec-inspired personal journey, introducing us to a deeper level of spiritual teaching and awareness.

In 2002, Don Miguel Ruiz suffered a near fatal heart attack that left him in a nine-weeks-long coma. The spiritual journey he undertook while suspended between this world and the next forms the heart of The Toltec Art of Life and Death, a profound and mystical tale of spiritual struggle. As his body lies unconscious, Ruiz's spirit encounters the people, ideas, and events that have shaped him, illuminating the eternal struggle between life-unending energy and truth-and death-matter and subjective knowledge-in which we are all called to engage.

Over ten years in the making, The Toltec Art of Life and Death invites readers into the mind of a master of spiritual seeking, offering an unparalleled and intimate glimpse into the development of a soul. In this culmination of a lifetime's learning, Ruiz shares with readers the innermost workings of his singular heart and mind, and summons us to grapple with timeless insights, drawn from ancient Toltec wisdom, that are the essence of transformation.

£2.99 -- Truly Madly Guilty -- Liane Moriarty/ Caroline Lee --> 17.6 hrs/ R-4.1 --> detective

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible (£2.99) | Kindle (£9.99)

Once again Liane Moriarty uses her unique, razor-sharp observational skills to sift through the emerging fault lines of seemingly happy families.

If only they'd said no....

What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself.

It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

$3.95 -- My Best Friend's Exorcism -- Grady Hendrix/ E Zeller --> 10.2 hrs/ R-4.1 --> paranormal

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($14.99)

A heartwarming story of friendship and demonic possession.

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since the fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act...different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby.

Abby's investigation leads her to some startling discoveries - and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

Like an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist, My Best Friend's Exorcism blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of '80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

The Black Ice --> Harry Bosch Series (book 2 of 21)

Whispersync: Audible ($3.49) | Kindle ($5.99)

Narcotics officer Cal Moore's orders were to look into the city's latest drug killing. Instead, he ends up in a motel room with his head in several pieces and a suicide note stuffed in his back pocket.

Years ago, Harry Bosch learned the first rule of the good cop: don't look for the facts, but the glue that holds them together. Now, Harry's making some very dangerous connections, starting with one dead cop and leading to a bloody string of murders that winds from Hollywood Boulevard's drug bazaar to the dusty back alleys south of the border and into the center of a complex and lethal game-one in which Harry is the next and likeliest victim.
