It's been years since I wore them, and the technology has improved, but I recall the precisely the same worries about touching my eye. But you do quickly get used to it, and the contacts, for me, were both literal and metaphorical revelation. You stop noticing they're in (I've tried to adjust contact lenses before realising I hadn't put them in), and because they "fix" your eyes rather than (feel like) you've just put glasses on, it was, for me, a moment of pleasing clarity that stayed. I hope it is for you too.

Note, I essentially stopped wearing them, and glasses, because I am chronically lazy. It wasn't because of any inherent problem with the contacts. I've only acquired glasses again just recently, ironically as my short-sightedness has become less of a problem (age and moving out from behind a monitor more often). I'll probably stay with glasses for the aesthetics (i.e. vanity ).

I hope they work out for you. I think it's a hope with reasonable probability of being satisfied.

Cheers,
Marc
Thanks Marc.

Got the contacts today and it wasn't as bad as I thought. They don't bother me at all and it's great to have a full field of view again.

The problem comes with getting them out. I struggled severely to get my right one out, leaving my eye red and irritated from the removal attempts. If I can get that sorted I'm golden. Will see how tomorrow goes.

It might take some time to get used to them, as I recall it took me a week or two to get used to taking them out and putting them in easily. You might find that a different brand of contacts is more comfortable for you to wear. I wear Biomedics, and I can't even tell I have them on most of the time.

The current contacts are very comfortable to wear. No complaints there. It's just that my technique for removing them sucks and I don't think my optometrist showed me the easiest way to remove them. Watched a couple of videos online and it seems the most recommended way is to move the contact down (or to the corner of your eye) and then pinch it.

She only showed me the direct "go for it over cornea" method, which made it extremely difficult for me. I'll see how it goes tomorrow. I'm definitely not going to give up on them just yet.

The direct "over the cornea" is the method I use, as well. Perhaps you could try wetting your eyes with a few drops of the saline solution that is used to store your lenses before trying to take them out (you can buy it in the tiny eye-drop bottles, but sometimes you get them for free with the large solution bottles as well); it will make your lens more mobile and pliant.

I've considered contacts. But when I did try them (good grief — 24 years ago) I needed to have gas-permeable rigid lenses (because of my astigmatism), and I found too uncomfortable to wear for any length of time.

There are various kinds of modern soft lenses that would work, but now I'm at an age where I'd need reading glasses anyway....

I also have astigmatism in my right eye and they've given me a soft disposable lens. Not sure what brand it is though. Works like a charm.

I had gas-permeable hard contacts many years ago and I could only wear them for a few hours at a time, but the last pair of soft lenses with astigmatim correction were great, but very expensive. I'll have to look into the, again, the pricing has probably come down.

I am reminded of a comedy routine by Bill Cosby, he was talking about getting bifocals foe very first time, I got a pair a year ago and I hate the damn things. Hate them so much that I had a pair of reading glasses made and a regular pair. It really sucks to have to carry 2 pair, but what can you do?

Blind people talking shop. Boring ...

No glasses. Just genetics.

Plus some basic good personal habit.
No hairs on the palms either ...
