You got me confused with this statement, so I went to look it up.
It seems (correct me if I'm wrong) that there are beads laid against the laminations just to stop them from buzzing without affecting eddy current.
The transformers themselves are like a figure 8 with the primary on the top, the secondary on the bottom and the middle bar an "escape path" for the flux to limit short circuit current.
Is that correct?

Sorry for the lumbering, I'd just wanted to say that at work we have two Panasonic NE1540, they are there since 1996, and are just fantastic. Being there, on a restaurant's kitchen doing their services since, it's not no many time imho LOL.

Mmm, what I was saying about a figure 8 above is almost kind of right if you consider the core an "88" that you could fold down the middle and make it an "8".

In the diagram, green is the primary (actually primary and filament) and red is the high voltage secondary. The gray are the magnetic shunts that give an escape path to the magnetic flux if the secondary is shorted. If not for the shunts the primary would try to take a ton of power.

Watch out because the liquid and conductivity is your first problem.
Your next problem is what the liquid was.
If it was soda pop with phosphoric acid you might want to take action now.
Coffee is not a lot better.
Various substances (even water) can corrode and eat things.

I'd be taking it apart and looking for damage.

I was thinking that a cup is fairly large so that there would be little chance of missing it...unless someone was extremely drunk. Then again, they might just drink it rather than measuring it.
