and no, your PW3 will not ship with a factory firmware, even if the version number is the same.
The device has been out for two years, they sold off the first build run long, long, long ago.

Hi knc1, I've got a PW2 running 5.8.11. Does that mean I'm not able to downgrade to an older firmware as well? I've managed to find "update_PW2_5.4.3.2_initial.bin" but I haven't gotten to jailbreaking it.

In addition to your instructions, I've also found this. Can I have your thoughts on this website?

Our "jail break" is only a signature certificate added to the key store so people can install our packages.

KOreader is one generally useful add-in

You will already have a serial port install, short of frying the silicon, with serial port access you can fix anything.

The jail break is "viral" - it auto re-installs itself after an Amazon update.
(except for the KOA2, where it is currently rather broken. )

If 11 is greater than 7 than you cannot jailbreak at this time.

Yes, I know the first post says that the jailbreak is not applicable for 5.8.7 and above, but there seems to be a way to downgrade the firmware to 5.4 and then jailbreak. So I'm just wondering if it's been done on a PW2 before.

The downgrading is a vital part (more precisely: the first step) of the jb procedure. And this can't be done if the device is already running a fw > 5.8.7.0.1 ...

So your statement is partially wrong: If still on 5.8.7(.0.1), it can be jailbroken. But if on fw 5.8.8 and above: no chance. Except that very special case with the one and only 5.8.9.0.1 that may be found on some devices now selling via non Amazon stores.

Read the directions, all of them.
When you get to the special exception for a PW2, follow the link, read those directions, follow them, and return to continue following the directions here.

With the KOA2 the jail break procedures are changing in the nature of their posting and maintenance.
They will be posted in the Wiki, where anyone can maintain them.

Hey guys, is there a jailbreaking method for the firmware 5.8.11? I was excited to jailbreak my new kindle but I can't seem to find a method to downgrade the firmware. Does anyone know one?
