I'll take it as a sub forum sign too. They did make what audiobook are you currently listening to as a sticky thread.

I just noticed that most of the different category threads (romance, mystery, Christian interest, etc.) in the Deals forum have now become stickies. But not this one.
Or it could just have been overlooked. All the other threads that just got stickied start with "FREE/BARGAIN...". Hopefully that's the case.

I'm surprised you didn't know that already. It was actually seriously suggested once a while back that audiobook discussions not be allowed because that isn't reading. I guess since it is in a single thread now days we are easier to ignore.

I check that thread but didn't remember if that was a sticky or not.

In addition to feeling snubbed by the new stickies in Deals, I think there are far too many of them--those genre deals usually start a new thread every month; what's the point of changing that?

Hey, PTB, audiobooks are an electronic medium, too!
Narrators, for example! I have as many as four versions of some classics and would like opinions.

Yes! And a big one for me: Which books are better as audiobooks and which as print? I have examples of both and I'd like to get input before I buy a potentially less-desirable format.

Well, I'll tell you one I wish I'd read in print--Code Name Verity, which was one of the SYNC audiobooks this summer. I don't want to say exactly why, but I would have appreciated the author's work more if I'd read the text. Nothing against the narrators, but it was the kind of book where I wanted to go back to certain passages.

I'm listening to one now, March Violets, that I'd enjoy more in print (which I know for a fact, as I have a print copy which I've been skimming for bits I missed). I'll stick with the audio as it's an adequate mindless listen for what I've got on tap this weekend, but it's doing the book a disservice.

I've abandoned a couple of other listens lately as they just didn't work for me in audio but I suspect I'd like them in print. Fortunately they were from OverDrive so no loss other than the nuisance factor.

If the book is non-fiction, a lot of it depends on the person.

When the book in question is non-fiction, the person often wishes to retain (learn) the information in the book; with fiction that is not nearly so much an issue. Some people learn better by the ear (listening), while others learn better by the eye (reading).

As far as I'm concerned, I think that I am a far better learner by reading than listening. However, I do buy a lot of audiobooks, because there are a lot of situations when I can listen, but I cannot read. I reason that using the time to gain a little bit of knowledge, by listening, is better than gaining no knowledge at all during that time.

The best you can do is listen to sample and other samples by that narrator. I prefer voice acting for my fiction. I'm rather picky about it. I only listen to a voice actor who can do a range of voices. What kills it for me is when you listen to a narrator for first few books in a series that's really good and the later books in the series are done by someone who does a horrible job reading. Fever series is a good example of this. I return the later books and read the eBook instead.

Today's Audible Deal of the Day is 2001: A Space Odyssey This was a Kindle Deal with WSV some months back, and I was seriously on the fence then but passed.

Since it is part of KU with narration, I can find a reason not to pull the trigger at the $2.95 price today.

I'll stay on the fence since I plan to try out if not go with KU at some point, and this one will go on the KU-Wish List for me, but others may be interested in it now.

It's $1.99 as a Whispersync title. I believe you can borrow it from KU or a public library and get the $1.99 pricing.

I borrowed 2001 on KU for the express purpose of buying the Audible version, but Amazon and Audible keep sending me in circles. Because I borrowed the book and it is a whispersync title, both web sites tell me that I already have it in my library. Only I don't really…when I return the KU book, the audiobook will go poof as well.

The Audible Daily Deal is $2.95. The price does go down to $1.99 now that I have borrowed the book, but I can't figure out how to actually buy the darn thing!

Any ideas on how to step out of the circle would be most welcome

I did trial runs on a few of these while I still had the KU trial and the Whispersync pricing was going through. Go here and tell me if you see the Whispersync price.

Yes…it is $1.99. Persists in saying that it is in my library, though only available to d/l to my Kindle or Fire -- not to my computer or iPod like ones that I have purchased outright.
