So, I decided to try some more of the free TOR books I had on my Kindle and was yet to read.

So far I tried _In the Garden of Iden_ which seemed like it was well written, but I guess it just wasn't my thing. Then I tried _Sun of Suns_ and just couldn't get into it. I read maybe four or five chapters of each of these, not just a few pages.

This morning I started _The Penal Colony_ by Herley. I enjoyed _Refuge_ so I know I like this author. It has a good start so I think I will stick with this one.

After that I will move on to _The Trial_ by Kafka, the Book Club selection for November.

I just finished "The Man Who Loved Books Too Much" and I highly recommend it, especially for those who love antiquarian books. Ebooks make a small guest appearance. While reading it, the author mentions John Dunning, a mystery writer whose books involve murder and rare books. So today I finally signed up at my local library (I recently moved) and picked up his book "The Bookwoman's Last Fling," as well as "Oryx and Crake," which several members here have highly recommended.

Finished 'Yellow Blue Tibia' by Adam Roberts. Funny, surreal and thought-provoking - recommended (although the proofing of the hardback edition I read was abysmal ).

Now reading 'The Book of Lost Things' by John Connolly, and enjoying it very much so far.

Just finished The Camel Club by David Balducci, which I borrowed from the library and it was a real pot boiler with very compelling characters.

Did you mean poor quality with "pot boiler"? Or did you mean that it was a good book in spite of being produced by a hack writer or very fast?

I just started "A Great and Terrible Beauty" by Libba Bray. It is a YA fantasy book (my guilty pleasure!). I am about a quarter into it, and it is a very easy read and quite enjoyable. I am doing heavy reading for school, so this is just the thing to relax.

I am halfway through "Good Omens" (Gaiman / Pratchett), and while it has its redeeming qualities, this book is not nearly as good as I was expecting it to be. I guess that's what happens when your hopes are too high - they get shot down.

I am also reading Indo-European Poetry and Myth by West. Not as good as "To Kill a Dragon", but then again I am only on page 86.

Next on my list is "The House of Storms", the sequal to the fantastic "The Light Ages" (Ian R. MacLeod), I can't wait!

Meant it was a fast read with lots of plot shifts and interesting characters. First Balducci I've read. Good mindless pulp fiction for reading on the commute to work.

Finished The Day the Falls Stood Still which was just okay. I thought the bits about Niagara Falls and the river were really interesting but the story around which they were weaved was not terribly original. Still a solid three out of five.

Now I'm reading Mil Millington's Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About which is hilarious. Much funnier than Love and Other Near Death Experiences which was also funny but didn't have quite so many laugh out loud moments.

Quite a while ago, I burned a crapload of titles on a CD and filed it away, not remembering what was on it.

Then I started reading the thread about Boyd Morrison and thinking to myself: Do I have these? I got out all my CDs and starting looking around and LO! (as Charles Fort might say), there they were.

Well, I just finished "The Ark." I thoroughly enjoyed it and can recommend it. I found the writing exciting but, for me, the middle dragged a bit (just a little).

I can see why he's turned Professional.

Good stuff, if you like a page-turning novel full of Adventure.

I'm reading "Care and Taming of a Rogue" by Suzanne Enoch. Then I'm hoping to start "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood.

Reading

Working my way through David McCollough's "Truman" slowly.

For fun, Dorothy Sayers' "Murder Must Advertise" and Seth Grahame-Smith's "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies".

Started and put aside because it's way too depressing, Rick Perlstein's "Nixonland".

Just finished 'The Book of Lost Things' by John Connolly which was absolutely wonderful!!

Now started 'Jarhead' by Anthony Swofford. I haven't seen the film, so far the book has been mixed.

"Shadows Over Baker Street" -- a very mixed bag of Lovecraftian themed pastiches of Sherlock Holmes - including tales by Neil Gaiman, Poppy Z. Bright, and other notables. I've just started - the quality (as in most anthologies) varies widely among the entries.
