After the fire he had gotten a lot easier with throwing things away. But after 3 years he's slowly but surely reverting back to old habits.

The big test will be tomorrow, when I'm going to sort through a big box of cables. I'll bet he wants to save those old printer cables with big plugs.

And he'll be right to do so. You *might* need to someday connect a printer produced before 1999, which doesn't have USB, you know? I've been saving my SCSI2 cables and spare parts for Vesa Local Bus controllers as well, in case I ever need to repair a 486 from 1992...

NOT.

Besides, if *he* wants to keep them, they can live in *his* closet.

In the workshop in the store there is a shelf filled with computer cards: videocards (8mb onwards), audiocards, SCSII cards, HDDs and tv cards. Because you never know....

There are also shelves of old catalogues, mostly from companies that don't exist anymore. He saved the in case he wanted some details of items that aren't sold anymore, but saving the 1976 Philips catalogue (I kid you not) is a bit of a waste of space.

I thought there was a huge pile of stuff in my closet. But after dumping most clothes and bags I discovered underneath were two big boxes of cds and dvds. That relieved me. Tomorrow I'll clear the rest of my clothes and bags and tackle the cable box.

I'm actually in the same process at the moment.

Tomorrow I should finish rearranging the piano, the keyboard, have all the cables cleared, and all older tech that is on the sell / give-away list disconnected. Then I'll put all of that on the internet.

By the end of this week I hope to have everything on the internet. The one thing I'll have to think about is the Leica M-Type photography stuff... rarely used nowadays, worth quite some money, but it's small, and doesn't get older. Lenses that are sharp now, are sharp in 10 years if kept well, and the M-mount won't ever disappear, as many mirrorless camera's can take those lenses using a simple adapter.

There isn't really an equivalent, it's not something the Brits do. Wish we did, as I have a sh*t load of stuff I could get rid of, including hundreds of educational toys and games from my wife's (now closed) business. I did sell them on Amazon for a while, but the hassle of responding to orders, and the large slice Amazon take for themselves did not make it worth the effort.

Aren't there any second hand websites? (edit: "Websites for second hand stuff", I mean.)

Just put five of those toys on the internet at a time. After you sell one, put up the next. It may take a year or so, but in the end, they'll be all gone.

I used eBay for a bit, but it's really only worth it for unusual items. I had a collection of thimbles that sold decently. Anything else will usually only sell for pennies, since the buyer counts the postage as part of his "price". So donating to Goodwill is usually easier.

You do realize some of us have kitchens full of "donated to Goodwill" stuff.
Can't resist a cheap Anti que or gadget.
That is what the woman at Goodwill called our latest waffle maker.

Your plight reminded me of my own lost luggage experience -- I flew from Columbus, OH (I was attending Ohio State Univ. then) into Louisville, KY for a conference held on Dec. 26 (lower air rates on the day after Xmas) -- and the plane I was on was filled with mostly attendees from OSU for this conference. The airline 'kindly' sent all of our luggage to Maine. We were a motley, grubby group in the cocktail lounge, and later at dinner, as the hotel scrambled to provide us with basic toiletries. I was lying on my bed (fully clothed - no PJs) after dinner when my luggage finally arrived -- I was so overjoyed at the prospect of clean underwear that I almost hugged the bellboy. He hurried away without waiting for a tip.

Marktplaats indeed! Very useful for both selling and buying secondhand stuff. You can also specify where you live and let it only show adverts within a certain distance if you want to pick it up instead of sending it through the mail.

Craig's List in NA. And eBay, of course. But eBay is really only worth it for something specific or if you're in the business of eBay.

I've seen Craig's List (Craigslist?) mentioned quite often on the internet. I don't know what to compare it to, to be honest.

Marktplaats, and Speurders are sites specific to the Netherlands. You put something on there, and people can contact you if they want to buy it. They can come and get it and pay cash, or you send it to them after they pay. It doesn't cost anything, except when you want specific things, such as "Bump this to the top of the advertisements", or "Give this a background color"; that sort of thing. That'll cost you something, like €1 to €10 depending on what you want to do.
