Somehow mayonnaise on French fries just sounds wrong.

Another southern favorite is Pinto beans with ham in them.

Upper peninsula of Michigan is said to serve a wicked "mayo & french" (but not quite thousand island?) on french fries. From an old boyfriend who used to recreate it further south than that one bar.

That's because it IS wrong. French fries get cheese curds and gravy, and we call it poutine!

This is a purely Canadian thing that is beyond description, but does actually work. Even for a newcomer Canadian.

Vinegar and fries for me. I read it in Jennifer Cruise's book Fast Women and was hooked.

I eat salt and watermelon if the melon isn't sweet enough it helps. Sugar on grapefruit is the norm around here. No one I knows eats grapefruit because it reacts badly to all sorts of medication.

I love Twizzlers, the cherry kind. I get the bite size version. I've never tried Red Vines.

That just reminds me of an amusing misunderstanding that occurred a long time ago on this very discussion board. I mentioned how much I liked biscuits & [pork sausage] gravy for breakfast. Someone thought I was referring to what Americans call cookies.

Umm good, especially when served with an over-easy egg on the biscuit half and then the gravy.

Sunny side up or scrambled sounds better than over easy. Oh and you can keep the whites.
Well now if a southerner went into a New England pub owned by a British guy, that would give a whole new meaning to Biscuits and Gravy.
Cookies with a tomato sauce does not sound good.

At the Canadian, can you describe your gravy?
Since gravy has different meanings.

I believe malt vinegar is standard in England on fish & chips both.

In a former life I used to spend a couple of months per year in Scotland. I can still hear the brogue of the fish 'n' chips purveyors asking if I wanted "salt 'n' vinegar?" I has to be malt vinegar though, just any old kind wouldn't do.

Here in the northeast (US) it's not unusual to cut a grapefruit in half, sprinkle a little sugar on it, and eat with a grapefruit spoon. That's the way we had it when I was growing up.

These days I just score the rind, peel it, and eat the grapefruit like an orange. But this is just one more reason why my wife thinks I'm nuts.

Wait. Aren't you suppose to be working? I thought only my hubby peeled grapefruits.

I'd rather peel a grapefruit than eat it with a spoon. You lose so much of it, when you go the spoon route!
