Just finished
I just finished Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. Written in 1892, it's about suburban English life. It's a good thing it's a short book, otherwise I never would have finished. The life of the family written about in that book just wasn't that fascinating. If it were a modern day blog, I'm not sure many would follow it.
The next book on my pile (paper book, as I am trying to weed out that excessively large pile), is the First Rumpole Omnibus by John Mortimer. Should be a good read. Paris Hilton? Not! I don't read much of the recently published books by choice. ![]() |

I just finished Oryx and Crake and downloaded The Year of the Flood tonight so I am ready to dive back in and see what's going on with the Crakers and all. Maybe one of our bookclub month themes should be apocalypse because I have really enjoyed several along this vein...probably doesn't say much about my Pollyanna outlook (not).

I've just finished Boomerang by MR member plumboz, and I found myself cracking up at some of the antics of the characters. The two old lady sisters and Ted and Jerry..... Definitely, a very fun read!
I'll steal a quote from the below thread.. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...42&postcount=6 Quote:
Verdant Skies by MR member Steve Jordan. I'm finding it to be very believable and especially interesting since I've vacationed at Yellowstone. Desbarolla published by MR member pdurant. His ePub version is beautiful with the illustrations and the manuscript first letter of each chapter (see his avatar for an example). It is a story that will appeal to both adults and children. Xenolith by MR member ASparrow. I can't say too much about this without giving spoilers but... very fun so far. |

Hya Mel and Kenny. Just finished my first read of *Oryx and Crake* too. What a superb piece of work. I read it so that I'd be ready for Margaret Atwood's follow-up, *Year of the Flood*. The prices for an ebook version of that new release here in Europe, though, are potty. Although it hurts to have to wait for the book, I will not pay that kind of funny money on principle. High prices by greedy and/or confused publishers and retailers could well stall what appears to be the long-awaited breakthrough of ereading and I will do nothing to encourage them. Cheers. Neil

Neil, can't fault you for that and I agree. The new John Irving is released here today and I was hoping the ebook price would be at least in the $9.99 area, but they have it listed the same as the pbook at $15.40 (on Amazon). I will standby and hope that they drop the price....
I did the same with The Year of The Flood, but couldn't wait til the $9.99 and bought it at $12.00 or somewhere near that. ![]() |

Just finished La chartreuse de Parme (English title?) and enjoyed it a lot. I think I missed a lot of the humor the first time round, all those years ago. Unfortunately the e-book I downloaded (I tried both Feedbooks and Gutenberg and apparently they are the same) was full of errors, so I downloaded the image PDF version and I'll try to correct the errors, then maybe post it here.

The Charterhouse of Parma by Stendahl
As for me, I am motoring through 'Petite Anglaise' by Catherine Sanderson. It's a memoir based on a blog (didn't know it was based on a blog when I bought it) and it's just so-so. I like the setting and think she does her best in those moments where she is is engaged in honest description. But she is too flowery and tries too hard to be 'clever' that sometimes the story gets lost. Also, she is kind of an annoying person and I don't find her very sympathetic. Still, it's a fast read, and I paid for it, so I am bound and determined to finish. |

Am motoring through "Unseen Academicals" - Sir Terry hasn't lost his touch! I always tear through a new Discworld book, then go back and take the time to chuckle over the really good bits. This one has a few more double entendres than usual - perhaps due to the sporting theme.
