Or are you claiming that you have never heard the term "1st world" (or "first world") before?

Look a the links I posted. The science and philosophy of the ancient world that almost totally died out in Europe survived in the Islamic world, and was the bootstrap for the Renaissance.

It is true, "1st World" was a term I hadn't come across.

Okay, I apologize then. But it is an old term.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_World#Definition

(I thought that you were making some sort of sarcastic remark based on some sort of political or philosophical problem with the use of the term.)

No need to apologise, I could have googled it and found the term myself, but it isn't one I've (consciously come across before). Not to worry ....

Actually there is a ministry that does print copies of the Bible for $2.50 each. They ship them in bulk to missionaries in the field all the time. They were at my local church one Sunday at the start of the month (missionary month). At least one shipment of theirs was seized by the local authorities (and perhaps burned). They don't know what actually happened to it. I don't see the point in deleting an electronic copy of a religious book myself. I mean the original copy is still going to be on a given publisher's server so deleting a religious book as a form of protest would be like trying to hold back the tide with a coffee mug. It's not going to work.

If I am making bibles for 2 dollars each and selling for 10 than I would want many of them burnt so I can resell as many of them as I can.

I would even set aside a few thousand with the sole purpose of being there to be burnt.

Yep you're right. The ancient Greek and Latin texts were translated into other languages (in Spain I think) and then with the crusades and men like El Cid the translations were found in the cities libraries and translated for the western world. James Burke in his "Connections" series on TV describes what happened.
The job of translating so many books must have taken decades to accomplish.

That's right; Knowledge of Greek had essentially disappeared in Europe, and with it, the works of the Greek philosophers, except a small amount that had been preserved by the church as being in agreement with its teachings. These manuscripts had been preserved in the Islamic world, and came back to Europe with the Moorish invasion of Spain in the 8th century. Moorish cities like Granada became centres of learning, where Christian scholars re-learned Greek and were essentially given back their own cultural heritage by the Islamic world. European culture would have been very much the poorer without this; it's difficult to imagine that later Western philosophers could have existed without the foundations laid by the ancient Greeks, and that knowledge would have been lost had it not been preserved in the Islamic world.

I said no such thing. I am VERY well aware that Greek culture was preserved particularly in the Byzantine empire, which was, in turn, conquered by the Turks.

By far the ancient greek texts we have now are not from arab sources but from Roman, Byzantine, and Ancient Greek ones.
Yes, thank you, I am very well aware of that. I said that knowledge of the Greek language had been lost in Europe, hence the often-seen comment in medieval manuscripts "Graecum est; non legitur" - "it is Greek, so it cannot be read". The manuscripts existed, but nobody could read them. Knowledge of the ancient Greek language returned to Europe primarily via the Moorish cities in Spain.

Maybe they would not got side-tracked in beliefs in old theory and we would have gotten a faster develompent of science and philosophy.

Did you read it? I tried to find if "first world" was used for "old world" but could not find any support for it. And I have never seen it used that way before.
