For most eBooks, there is nothing special about layout. So Mobi is just fine. Yes, ePub can do more, but if the layout doesn't requite it, then Mobi is ok.

One place ePub has been seen to shine these days is when the books contain images/photos. They sometimes tend to be better in ePub then Mobipocket.

Maybe.. I sure hope so. I would love to see a 900 without a touch layer at the same price as a Kindle 3G.

Well, they can sell DRM free on Amazon.com through DTP right now if they choose to (and I suspect that this service will be coming soon to .dk, .fr, .co.uk and other European territories after the UK Kindle store Launches in August). Amazon have locked down the US, now they're coming for Europe and they're coming first for the biggest market beyond the US; the UK. Next will be Germany, then France, then the rest of Union.

At the price point/feature set there's nothing out there that even comes close to the Amazon Kindle ecosystem from either a reader or an independent author's perspective.

Actualy, we already had lots of devices supporting .mobi – before Amazon bought Mobipocket. Amazon killed them all off in favour for Kindle. Now that Amazon killed them all why would Amazon allow them back?

Don't kid yourself: If Amazon wins the format war then Amazon will become the Evil Monopolistic Overlord of eBook business.

Hint: not the format is important - the DRM scheme is. Who holds the DRM encryption servers holds all the power.

The problem with this reasoning is that Amazon allows publishers to publish without DRM, regional restrictions or TTS turned off. If you're an independent you can publish your works with as much freedom, and many times more freedoms, than almost all the rival ePub only major ebook sellers. DRM will become useless and abandoned within a few years, just as it was with digital music.

Teleread has an article about the CJK and Cyrillic font support that is new to the Kindle 3.

Well using DTP things can be published DRM free. The big pubs go through Mobipocket and are required to use DRM according to Tom Doherty (founder of Tor).

Which is why Amazon probably isn't interested in someone else's encryption schemes.

Most consumers don't know .tpz or .mobi or .azw-it's all Kindle to them.

That is bound to change soon enough (no use for those publishers right now though). To be cruel, I don't care about big publishers and their woes, I don't read mainstream fiction anyway. My focus is on the independents and what Amazon is doing to enable them to reach a bigger audience. And they're doing a lot more than the big publishers ever did for those writers.

As an amusing aside, though still on topic, if you go to the K3 page on the UK site and hover over the fifth thumbnail in the gallery in the top left it shows a picture of someone reading the Daily Mail. However, the tooltip displays "Kindle reading the Economist".

On the US site both picture and tooltip refer to the New York Times.

I'd love to know how late in the process someone decided that they'd get more sales to Daily Mail readers than Economist readers...
