funny sischa, i didn't mention kenny or anyone else in my post. i was referring to the one single post you made and your words in it, in particular things like "But in the end i am not that kind of person who cheers like a little cheerleader about features like fancy page turning or flashing books like Alice in wonderland" so anyone else who likes the ipad is "little cheerleader"? or "could never think about something stupid like throwing away my other ereaders now"? so anyone who decides to stop using another device is "stupid"? maybe i simply don't want to carry 6 devices with me. i certainly don't use the 8 track system i had in the 70's any more to listen to music. does that make me "stupid" for replacing it? "I have the iPad and i just feel sorry for all the people out there using it for long reading sessions cause they just have one reading device." maybe i feel sorry for people who can't manage to find one device they're happy with and have to carry around a dozen.

it was your words that i thought sounded bitter and foolish. you might try re-reading them after you've calmed down a bit. then again, from your response, you just sound like a bitter person all around.

I have a simple question, Scott: why don't you use caps, like everyone else? This really makes your posts harder to read.

Oh, and I agree with you about the brightness setting in iBooks, and the sepia in Kindle app....
For those who dislike (or think they do) reading on an LCD screen, try the Kindle app and use the sepia setting with the iPad. I just wish iBooks had such settings.

What really needs a serious upgrade is Safari. There are just too many cases where it just doesn't work properly. Thankfully, MR is not one of them.

Hey Jon, have you looked at iCab? Or Atomic Browser?

They will still have the same issues as they do have to use bits of Safari. None of the alternate browsers are 100% separate from Safari. The biggest problem is sometimes not being able to bring up the keyboard to type.

I am trying to decide if I want an iPad or not. I finally have enough saved up to get a 16gig wifi iPad. But I am still not sure if I want one or not yet. We'll see.

I have not had that problem with Safari, but that is the main reason I don't use Atomic. Do you have any idea what the problem is? I had not seen it talked about before, and thought it was just an odd combination of Atomic Browser and a setting on my iPad......

Hmmm. I can read electronic books on my iPad so it seems to function as an ereader.

And then again switch to my Kindle DX or K2 for eink reading, give my iPad battery a rest and enjoy the clear eink screen of my Kindles. And i can just start reading at the location where i stopped reading on my iPad and vice versa cause of the great Kindle app.

If I have the choice (and good light conditions ) I would always choose one of my kindles for reading a book and never my iPad. But if i just could keep one device i would maybe choose the iPad cause i "can" read on it. Just not the best experience you can get out there.

...
Heh, it seems like Arstechnica feels exactly like you do - except that the author there (bizarrely) just went back to pbooks:

"... After all, doesn't E-Ink still make for a more comfortable reading experience than the iPad's LCD screen?

The answer, in at least my own case, is yes, E-Ink is easier on the eyes, but I've found that carrying only one device is easier on the shoulders.

Now that I've gotten used to reading on the iPad, I've ditched my Kindle entirely. I've now gone back to buying my books in dead-tree format for at-home reading, both because print is more relaxing and because it comes without DRM. I also have a few Kindle copies of some of my books on my iPad for when I travel. So in some cases I'm paying twice for the same book, but the print copy is mine—I honest-to-God own it—while the electronic copy is more of a fee that I pay to be able to read the book on my iPad when I go on a long trip.

oh it functions as one, and a word processor, an email client, a web browser. as I've said, i'd call it a media tablet long before I'd call it an ereader.

I agree with you on that. Even the nook and the kindle are trying to be more than just ereaders now.

And you are going to see that more and more over the next few years, and they all try to be more like the iPad. The mainstream market is moving that way, and they know it.

Good luck 5 years from now finding a device that is just an eBook reader....
