Like so many others - The Hobbit and LOTR. Also Terry Brooks, The Sword of Shannara. There was also a book I used to read about once a month when I visited my mother; There is a River: The Story of Edgar Cayce. I wouldn't call it a favorite, but it was always on hand.

Slan by A.E. van Vogt
"Slan is legendary science fiction author A. E. Van Vogt's first and best-known novel, back in print from Tor Books's Orb imprint. The story is classic golden age science fiction: Jommy Cross is a slan, a genetically bred superhuman whose race was created to aid humanity but is now despised by "normal" humans. Slans are usually shot on sight, but that doesn't stop Jommy's mother from bringing him to see the world capital of Centropolis, the seat of power for Earth's dictator, Kier Gray. But on their latest trip to Centropolis, the two slans are discovered, and Jommy's mother is killed. Jommy, only 9 years old, unwittingly becomes caught up in a plot to undermine Gray, who may be more sympathetic to slans than the public suspects. The nonstop action and root-for-the-underdog plot has made Slan a science fiction favorite. " |

My favorite book as a child was The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. I still have the original book and now have the whole collection on my Kindle. I read it again every couple of years.
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is a once a year read. I love all of Susan Howatch's work, but only two of them are Kindleized, so those are the only two I reread now. Stephanie Plum, of course, but with that agency model going on, I probably won't be buying any more of them. Agatha Christie Nero Wolfe |

I love Agatha Christie beyond all reason... she ALWAYS tricks me!! I never ever guess who the bad guy is, but at the end it's all crystal clear...

Not "a" book, but not much different from Annotated Sherlock Holmes in that it's a body of one author's work. I reread the Dick Francis books once every five years or so.

Oh dear... there's something wrong with me...
I love a number of authors mentioned here, the Narnia books, LOTR, Sherlock Holmes but I couldn't read any of them again... the ones I DO read again and again are... All the Asterix Books they are superb, written on so many levels and laugh out loud funny I also have a couple of Lucky Luke books I dip into occasionally, Everything by Dr Seuss (I love the illustrations), A book of John Betjamin poetry (yes I can't remember how to spell his name). McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy - very very funny and the only grown up book I seem to be able to re-read... oh no actually I tell a lie, I could re-read pretty much anything by Terry Pratchett... but I do find it annoying, on about page 3, when you remember the whole of the rest of the book, while Dr Seuss and Goschinny and Uderzo have this knack of being different each time, probably because of the detail in the illustrations... I suppose, also, I have so little time to read anything, and there are so many new books to read, that I don't re-read as much as I might... Blimey! does any of this make sense? I would love to see a Kindle or Nook version of The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements by Eric Hoffer. I've read this a couple of times in paper, and would love to read it a couple of times more on one of my ereaders.
Hoffer presents a fascinating study of fanatics of every stripe, from religious (and anti-religious) extremists to those who seek to give their lives meaning by swearing blind allegiance to political parties and Utopian ideologies. |

Mine is a bit odd in that it's actually a children's book.
When I was in elementary school, I was OBSESSED with John Bellairs' A House With A Clock In Its Walls. It was a little creepy, had a short, fat kid as the hero (shades of myself) and was just so mysterious. The illustrations for the cover and for the few sprinkled throughout the book were done by Edward Gorey. Cut to umpteen years later when I was the manager of a Waldenbooks. I had an out-of-print service track down an exact library copy of the one I used to check out in elementary school. It's now my prized possession. If the house was burning, it's probably the first thing I'd grab. And yes, I definitely reread it often. Best, Jay Hartman Editor-In-Chief Untreed Reads Publishing http://www.untreedreads.com |

There is one book out there like that for me. Only I haven't yet managed to find out the author's name or the full title (it was one of those first books that I used to take out obsessively when I got my library card as a kid). But one of these days...
