I sent Fictionwise a huge list of typos for the book "Sten", and not too long afterward, received this reply: "Our publishing team has corrected the file for "Sten" if you would like you can download a revised copy." Apparently, some books they can correct themselves.

That's a Multiformat book and for those, yes FW makes the corrections since they're putting them out for the publisher/author.

Can anyone confirm that Amazon has uploaded a corrected version of LOTR? Are the errors still present?

I emailed Kindle Support asking about this yesterday, and they said it was in progress, and something about it being hard to remove the "Buy Now" facility, which sounds bogus to me.

It is bogus. Just look at the Kindle edition of The Stand. They did it for that so it could be pulled to have the TTS off thingy added to it. They can do it for any eBooks they want.

Are you joking? The Stand has been gone for ages, and they're apparently going to repost it under the same ASIN, so there was no reason to pull it just to make such a tiny metadata change. They could have replaced the new file with the old without pulling it off the market for months.

I know it's easy enough to add in the TTS disable bit to the files. I have no idea what Amazon is doing. Their infinite wisdom is not infinity nor wise.

Yeah, it is easy... therefore there wouldn't be any reason to remove a title for months to make this tiny change!

(BTW, my old copy of The Stand still works fine.)

It's not yet been corrected. I asked at FW last week, and they said that they're still waiting for a new version from the publishers. Amazon can't make the change - it needs to be done by HarperCollins, the publisher.

Summarised from this thread:

1. Two map are missing from LOTR - the map of the west of middle earth, and the map of Rohan/Gondor/Mordor
2. Monochrome cover images
3. Missing colour plates in The Hobbit, and the map is in monochrome
4. LOTR missing the images of the Book of Mazarbul (which do appear in the 50th anniversary edition)
5. Poor coding in the Mobipocket version of LOTR, leading to different text indents at the start of paragraphs in various places.
6. Weird links on some text in the Mobipocket version
7. Some odd bits of text missing in LOTR.
8. Some character set problems (missing text after accented characters)
9. Old text used with at least one copy editing comment left in

Missing characters after nearly every acute accent IS bad, so are random missing chunks of text.

Buying what you know to be an inferior, flawed product sends the message to the publishers that it's okay to keep releasing it that way.
