You need a text editor that does Unix file endings, not a word processor or Windows Notepad. Notepad++ works. Any plain text editor on Mac, BSD, Linux etc will work.

Find
[ApplicationPreferences]

Add
SideloadedMode=true

If it's already there and false, edit it to true.

On Mac, BSD, UNIX, Linux you need to enable view of hidden files & folders because the top directory/folder starts with a dot.
Excellent, thanks!

But that triggered a complete reset. I had to go through the initial setup again. I had to connect to a Wifi network and then sign in. There was no option to skip that.
So what is the proper way to enable sideload mode then?
Yes, indeed it is annoying . It got so frustrating I went through the unlock device procedure (UT) and now can sideload at leisure without going through the setup each time.
I keep vast amounts of documents and books on a sideload for work so need to swap them often depending on days processes. Having to go through a complete reset each time is just not useful.
It almost, seems to be getting to the stage of no longer trusting the updates as it is making Kobo eReader usage harder and narrower. Having several eReaders does help, however...

You don't need the sideloading mode to sideload. All the books on my Kobos are sideloaded and I've never bothered to enable the sideloading mode.

How did I not know about sideloaded mode? Even the books I bought from Kobo are sideloaded.

I should browse Mobileread more.

I like this mode; I really, really, really like it. I finally managed to get rid of all the clutter I never used or cared about. And having a home screen that is not a home screen is great. And Pocket is still there.

This is my Kobo from now on.

Maybe it's needed for books that still have Kobo's DRM?

I doubt it, but I don't have any such ebooks to test.
It's just so the Kobo doesn't connect to Kobo. Has the side effect of making "My Books" be the "home screen".
All our Kobos in the family have "sideloadedmode" on because we all only use Calibre to load ebooks, no-one uses sync, no-one uses the Internet on the ereaders (they all have phones & tablets etc) and everyone prefers "My Books" as the default screen.

It just means that the e-reader can function without synching with a Kobo account. It can still connect to Kobo,, and one really neat thing is that a sideload mode kobo will still be able to download/install dictionaries.. (thanks Kobo, that was very friendly). But opening books with Kobo DRM is the one thing it absolutely can't do without a kobo account. It never occurred to me to test Adobe DRM,, that might actually work.

ADE requires you to authorise your Kobo with your Adobe ID when the Kobo is connected to your PC over USB, so a Kobo account shouldn't be required.

You can only sideload books without DRM, regardless of whether your device is linked to a Kobo account.

That is not so. You can side load eBooks with DRM as long as the Kobo is authorized to allow DRMed eBooks. The eBooks need to be authorized to the same account as the Kobo for the DRMed eBooks to work.

How would you obtain such an e-book? Unless I'm mistaken, the only way to obtain a Kobo book with Kobo DRM is by performing the sync action on the Kobo. When you download an e-book from the Kobo website, you get an ACSM file for the ADE EPUB version. There's no option to download a KEPUB directly.

And the ADE epub version has DRM, and can be sideloaded using ADE and a USB cable.
