Well, you can determine if it is indexing. Go to search box, enter in garbage such as "dkdjjs" and let it search. If "Text in books" in grayed out with a 0 then it is not indexing. Otherwise if you select that then you can see what books it still is working on indexing thus not able to search those books for that string.

My Oasis 2 does not behave like that in auto mode. In sunlight the frontlight goes off completely, and indoors it's usually around 10 or 11. Pretty much what I want. I read somewhere in these forums that the light level on auto is adaptive - it learns what levels you prefer in various conditions. If so, I guess we have ours trained very differently.

In direct sunlight the front light turns off, but you might be in for a surprise what happens on a hazy or slightly overcast day when the shadows are not distinct.

I would find 22 to be way too bright. I've seen the front light of the PW3 and I would not read at 22.

In a bright environment 22 is not too bright, it is not even particularly noticeable, so it does seem to be a waste of battery. But there may be some that think it looks better and is worth the battery usage.

Also, 22 on the PW3 and the 7" Oasis are not necessarily the same. They are just arbitrary numbers, like some amplifiers that go to 10 and others that go to 11.

I've read in a variety of conditions, indoors and out, with it and it never goes that bright. And we've had our share of haze and overcast here lately.

Unless you keep the brightness adjust dialog box visible, how do you know how bright it gets?

I have seen mine go to 22.

It is true that the auto adjustment for the lights on the Kindle Voyage and (I assume) Oasis 2 do adapt to your preferences. When I first turned on the auto adjustment feature on my Voyage it would either be way to dim or way to bright for my liking. I would adjust it to where the lighting was comfortable for me and after a few sessions I rarely have to manually adjust the light level.

22 is insanely bright, I'm pretty sure I'd notice that. Perhaps I wouldn't in direct sunlight, but I don't often read that way.

I suspect the Oasis has adjusted to my preferences. As I recall, it was brighter than I liked in auto mode when I first got it, but I adjusted it down and it now seems to work well for me. Every time I bring up the settings menu, if the brightness isn't at zero, it's in the 10 to 12 range. In dim light, that's very slightly brighter than I'd like, but I'm kind of afraid to mess with it now! And in the dark, those levels are fine for me in the inverse screen mode.

Nothing wrong with that but it will run your battery down fast. I am already down to 54% in 3 days just on light level 10 to 13
