This is another one I will personally endorse.

This first book is a bit like a fantasy primer - tropes all over the place - but it's quite good fun nevertheless, and I understand things really pick up in the rest of the series, although I haven't actually got as far as reading the second one, yet.

Bargain @ $1.99 from HarperCollins' William Morrow imprint in Canada & the US (redeemable for points @ Kobo, price-matched at all the usual retailers):

I Sing the Body Electric and Other Stories by the late Ray Bradbury (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a collection of his classic stories originally published in 1969 by Alfred Knopf, and then later expanded with additional stories in 1998 when picked up by HC's Avon imprint, according to Wikipedia. I remember reading the title story because of the eponymous classic Twilight Zone episode which it was the vague basis for, and turned out didn't really have all that much in common with it anyway, but both versions were still good.

The mind of Ray Bradbury is a wonder-filled carnival of delight and terror that stretches from the verdant Irish countryside to the coldest reaches of outer space. Yet all his work is united by one common thread: a vivid and profound understanding of the vast seet of emotionsthat bring strength and mythic resonance to our frail species. Ray Bradbury characters may find themselves anywhere and anywhen. A horrified mother may give birth to a strange blue pyramid. A man may take Abraham Linkoln out of the grave--and meet another who puts him back. An amazing Electrical Grandmother may come to live with a grieving family. An old parrort may have learned over long evenings to imitate the voice of Ernest Hemingway, and become the last link to the last link to the great man. A priest on Mars may confront his fondest dream: to meet the Messiah. Each of these magnificient creations has something to tell us about our own humanity--and all of their fates await you in this new trade edition of twenty-eight classic Bradbury stories and one luscious poem. Travel on an unpredictable and unforgettable literary journey--safe in the hands of the century's great men of imagination.

Bargain @ $1.99 in the US for today only (March 23rd) from Open Road Media as one of their daily newsletter specials (couponable/VIP-eligible @ Kobo, price-matched at all the usual retailers):

Selected Stories by the late Theodore Sturgeon (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a collection of his vintage science fiction tales assembled in 2000 by Random House's Vintage Books imprint, but consisting mainly of shorts from the 1940s-50s, according to ISFDB, which also mentions that it placed 17th for Best Collection in the Locus Awards.

Depending what your budget is like, it may actually work out cheaper to slowly invest in the 13 volumes of The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon series from North Atlantic Books, which are couponable @ Kobo CA (but apparently not the US), but this seems a pretty good price as an introduction to his earlier work if you're not already familiar with it.

One of science fiction’s most beloved trailblazers, Hugo and Nebula–Award winning author Theodore Sturgeon wrote novels and short fiction that inspired and amazed readers and critics alike.

In Selected Stories, thirteen of Sturgeon’s very best tales have been gathered into one collection: Here are stories of love and darkness, transcendence and obsession, alien contact and human interaction. In the devastating wake of a nuclear holocaust, an actress performs her swan song before a small audience of survivors. A machine is possessed and intent upon destruction. Humankind’s place in the vast cosmos is explored, as is the strange humanity of evil. In the author’s acclaimed story “The Man Who Lost the Sea,” a life is reconstructed in bizarre shattered fragments. And in “Slow Sculpture,” Sturgeon’s award-winning classic, a breast cancer patient surrenders to a healer’s most unorthodox methods. Lyrical, often witty, frequently provocative, and always surprising, Selected Stories covers a wide range of human and inhuman emotion and experience, deftly traversing the borders between science fiction, dark fantasy, and horror.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Theodore Sturgeon including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the University of Kansas’s Kenneth Spencer Research Library and the author’s estate, among other sources.

Bargain @ $1.99 from HarperCollins & Penguin in Canada & the US:
  • Neuromancer by US-born Canadian resident author William Gibson (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a 20th anniversary edition of his cyberpunk classic (Wikipedia), which netted a hat trick of the Nebula, Hugo, and Philip K. Dick Awards.
  • Airborn by Canadian author Kenneth Oppel (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a 10th anniversary edition of the 1st in his Airborn trilogy of YA alternate history steampunk adventures. This one won the Governer General's Award, alongside a number of other honours (Wikipedia). Two different editions for Canada & the US, but both priced at $1.99 in their respective currencies. NB: there's a 3-book omnibus edition Kenneth Oppel Airborn Series: Three-Book Bundle in Canada which actually works out slightly cheaper for the combined lot, once you factor in the cost of adding the 2nd & 3rd at regular price (assuming no future price-drop sales on them) and that HC is non-couponable.
  • Gilded Latten Bones by Glen Cook (ISFDB, Wikipedia), 13th in his long-running Garrett, P.I. series of investigative urban fantasy in a noir detective style according to its Wikipedia entry.

Amazon.com is matching that Neuromancer price. Which is good for me: I get to remove a ratty old paperback off my IRL bookshelf and put a clean new model on my Virtual Bookshelf.

Bargain @ $2.99 (and DRM-free), possibly for today only (March 27th) from Tor Books as the Kobo Daily Deal for Canada (also appears to be matched in the US and at Amazon & B&N, but not Google Play CA):

Company Town by Canadian author Madeline Ashby (ISFDB, SFE), a standalone sfnal mystery set off the coast of Canada with cyborg bio-engineering and parallel timeline elements which was published just last year. According to one of the review complaints, this was a CBC Canada Reads selection, which they didn't feel lived up to that.

Linkage for eBooks.com (giftable), Amazon main, Kobo US, B&N, and Google Play where it may also be discounted in the US.

They call it Company Town--a city-sized oil rig off the coast of the Canadian Maritimes, now owned by one very wealthy, powerful, byzantine family: Lynch Ltd.

Hwa is of the few people in her community (which constitutes the whole rig) to forgo bio-engineered enhancements. As such, she's the last truly organic person left on the rig--making her doubly an outsider, as well as a neglected daughter and bodyguard extraordinaire. Still, her expertise in the arts of self-defense and her record as a fighter mean that her services are yet in high demand. When the youngest Lynch needs training and protection, the family turns to Hwa. But can even she protect against increasingly intense death threats seemingly coming from another timeline?

Meanwhile, a series of interconnected murders threatens the city's stability and heightens the unease of a rig turning over. All signs point to a nearly invisible serial killer, but all of the murders seem to lead right back to Hwa's front door. Company Town has never been the safest place to be--but now, the danger is personal.

A brilliant, twisted mystery, as one woman must evaluate saving the people of a town that can't be saved, or saving herself.
