The KA1 has a 1200mA battery. Your comment about how long you can read on the eInk screen is why for years, my eInk ereaders have had a place in my laptop bag along with multiple other devices -- I can read an eInk screen for a lot longer than an LCD screen before my eyes start complaining.

I read at night mostly, so The Aura one Front Light is easier on my eyes. The iPad Mini 4 retina screen is beautiful but for reading text over a long period of time the eReader just is softer? I'm not sure how to describe it. Since I got My Aura one I am on my 5th book so i'm a eReader convert. Fully up to date, done factory reset. Since I'm fully charged I'm going to turn off the sync see if that makes a difference.

Softer sounds like a good description. I was going to say that eink screens have the same sort of ink "bleed" that you see on cheaper paper, whereas high resolution tablet screens may be more like high quality glossy paper with no ink bleed.

battery problem

I have a KA1 and i'm happy with it. The only problem is the battery. It drains rapidely from 70% to 60% and from 40% to 30%. There is any way to avoid this problem??? I tried with factory reset, but no result. I have last firmware.

The battery level is not linear. The change by say 10% is not going to take the same time all the way from 100% down to 0%.

But, how rapidly does it happen in those ranges? How fast compared to the rest of the range? What is your overall reading time from full to zero?

David thanks for the fast response. The drain in those ranges is almost immediate. At 70% or at 40%, just turning a couple of pages it drains a 10%.

Mario, how much reading timewise do you get before going from, say, 100% to, say, 50%?

Your overall time might be within scale thereby perhaps making your concern a non-issue.

Hi Pete, actually i didn't check the reading time between two specific percentages. I will do it. What I checked instead is the battery drain per hour.
4% per reading hour and 1% per day in standby.

Mario, it sounds like you are in good shape and shouldn't be concerned with the idiosyncrasy you observed.

4% per reading hour is better than expected (the KA1 battery is rated to last for 30 days reading 30 minutes per day so 15 hours reading time and about 6% per hour). One of the design choices for the KA1 was a smaller battery to keep the weight of the device close to the weight of the Aura H2O.

I just got my KA1 last week and here are my battery observations so far:
  • First charge. Got about 23 hours of reading time over one week, got down to 46%, at which point I charged it.
  • Second charge. Almost 3 days so far, about 9 hours of reading, 72% left.

Based on that I would assume that the 30 days also accounts for the ~700 hours of sleep time as opposed to binge reading.

So it seems that the discharge pace on the second charge is a little faster unless the battery discharge slows down in the next few days. I'm on 4.2.8110, and that's the only firmware version I had (I don't count what came on it as it was replaced by 4.2.8110 as part of the initial setup).

Stay on 4.2.8110. There is a newer one floating around out there, but it drains the battery. I tried it and went back to 4.2.8110. All is well.

Yes, 4% per reading hour is what I expected from KA1 and I'm ok with it. The problem is that due to the two sudden drops I benefit only 80% of the total charge. I can live with it,but I'd like to know if there was any way to avoid it.

I never upgrade until the benefits of doing so are clear and the patches are out So far neither applies to the latest version

The patches are out and there are benefits to the new firmware such as hardware acceleration and graphics changed to 32bpp.
