One big reason light bulbs burn out so quickly is that the filaments are thin. They're thin because thinner filaments burn hotter (less surface area to dissipate power), and thus dissipate more of their power as visible light rather than as heat. Additionally, that 114-year-old bulb is apparently dissipating much less power than it should. Nobody has studied it carefully enough to determine why this is the case, but apparently it has higher than expected resistance when at normal operating temperature. If I ran a current-generation 110 volt light bulb at 7 volts, it would last nearly forever, too. Quote:

For the recessed lighting in my house I am using Phillips 800060 65W Daylight.
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Equiva.../dp/B00YJ5TG0C I replaced all of the overhead case light Halogens in my store with MR16 Daylight LEDs. The savings in cooling costs were more than the savings from lower voltages. Halogens put out a lot of heat. ![]() http://www.lightingever.com/4w-gu5-3...ght-white.html Apache |

In the one room where I have recessed lighting, I use LED BR30 replacement flood bulbs. *I'm probably going to get similarly integrated fixtures to replace my workshop florescent tubes, and my kitchen ceiling fixture. No particular reason for buying separate fixtures and bulbs if the bulbs should never need replacing, especially if the integrated ones look nice and...um...integrated. |

In the case of these fixtures, the hope is that they're even better made than the cheaper bulbs, and they certainly have more room to include proper heat-sinks, etc, and if they do fail, well, they are not that much more expensive than the bulbs anyway, and you're paying for the nice styling and integrated look, and man, this is about the longest sentence I've written in a while! Have you tried "daylight spectrum" CFLs? I think they're great - a much more natural-looking light than the normal ones.

So after all that I wrote above, my wife went to get a new phone today, and even the 'subsidised' price for any phone she wanted was so high, we decided to switch to the new device payment plan. We spent a lot of time in the shop and honestly I'm still not sure if I'm getting a better deal or not. More importantly, to the topic of the thread, the new Samsung phone she wanted no longer has an as slot. We're both ticked off at that. It was a very Apple thing to do, and if we thought anyone at Samsung cared, we'd be complaining.

The kind of data that most folks use on a smartphone--hires photos, videos, music--is big, and needs space. It can be argued that Amazon figures most users will never fill the 2 or 4 gb on an eink kindle so the slot would only serve a small segement of users, but smartphone makers know darn well smartphone uses will need More and more space, and they want you to pay through the nose...one way or the other...for it. @ApK: if an SD card slot was important to you, you should have waited until the new S7 comes out. It will (should) be announced next week, being available sometime march. Supposedly the SD card slot will be back.
