Will calibre be getting updated so I can put the KFX books in it?
As darryl said, I wouldn't depend on it.

It may happen, it may not. Either way, there is no telling when, so that isn't a solution for you NOW.

When you try to add a KFX book to calibre, calibre should warn you that you cannot add it and direct you to http://amazon.com/manageyourkindle where you can download the AZW3.

(The problem is not the updating; Calibre gets updated practically every hour, it seems to me . The problem is that nobody can decode KFX. So you need to pull the book in a different format, until that happens.)

For now, download from Amazon's website 'for transfer via usb' to your paperwhite, and you'll get .azw3 files that calibre (& the DeDRM plugin) understands.

FWIW, I've acquired a new Fire tablet (gosh, it seems SLOW compared to my three-year-old Fire HD), and my books look just fine. I'll go over them more carefully when I am on the road next week, but so far the results of the automagical hyphenation haven't caused me any heart palpitations. So from the point of view of an author, KFX seems a seamless advance from KF8.

(My books are fairly routine, no media queries or like that.)

In addition to the suggestion others mentioned of downloading from the website, downloading the books to Kindle for PC/Mac also provides files that can be imported into calibre.

At present that, true, yes, although I would expect KFX support to be added to these applications shortly.

What's logical is there are more people out there who want smaller setting (margins/line-height) than would ever use the third set of settings. So why not change the third set of settings to what more people want?

Can you present some evidence for this assertion?

I imagine because Amazon has data that contradicts your data.

Since neither you nor Amazon seem willing to share their data, the rest of us can only guess.
And my guess is that Amazon is right, since they've sold more ereaders than you have.

It would seem to me that the ability to have 0 margins on the flat-screen Voyage would make good sense because there is no bezel or bezel shadow to obscure the text. As such, one would be able to use the whole screen for text. In any case, why not add it? People don't have to use it. I can see no good reason for not adding the option.

Feature creep, anyone?

Adding features for the sole justification that "why not add it, people don't have to use it" is a terrible idea.

Amazon want to give people a good reading experience. Having no margins is a terrible idea typographically - when did you ever see any printed work that had no margins? Margins are there for a good reason.

Well, an eBook reader has a bezel all around the screen. That can easily serve as a margin for visual purposes. I often set the margins to 0 on eBook readers to maximize the data on the screen. And Amazon already has settings for margins but only the ones they like.

I must--as a reader, not in my exalted role as the Royal High-n-Mighty Priestess of eBookery (phllbbbbbbbfffft)--respectfully disagree. When I pull out my Voyage, and imagine reading with the text going edge-to-edge...boy. I wouldn't want to read text--especially something dense, in terms of paragraphical layout--on a Voyage sans margin. I really wouldn't.

Offered solely for what any opinion is worth:

I give myself a tiny margin, but close to zero. Amazon has margin and line spacing that is too large for me, and not enough font sizes. Font sizes go from just a little too small to huge. My mother got a Kindle last year after her second Nook broke down. She doesn't like the settings either.
