About the script "exit Nickel"

Hi

I have an old version (16 months?) of the Start Menu and I am quite afraid to update it. It's working quite well to launch either Nickel or Koreader. The only small trouble I have is with the script "exit Nickel" when I am using Nickel.

It works... sometimes yes, and sometimes no (I only go to the image) and I do not understand why. I would like to know what I am missing to make it more reliable.

Let's try the obvious first: do you always start Nickel from KSM? If you boot up directly to Nickel, "exit Nickel" will not work.

Well, well, no need to go further, I got the answer (not obvious for me)

In fact, I must have selected a setting somewhere sometime (no memory) and once I start directly Nickel, once I start KSM first (from there the different results). Now I have to modify this setting to start everytime from KSM. First finding it...

EDIT: OK I found it: runsettings.txt

Thanks for your help.

With your older install of KSM, you probably need to edit the "runsettings.txt" file in your "kbmenu" folder.

The newer versions of KSM include an "auto select" after a number of seconds. You would edit "usersettings.txt" to set what to a start and how many second to wait before starting it. If you do the editing using Notepad++, the formatting is much easier to read and understand.

That way you could have KSM start and then a few seconds later have Nickel start, all automatically, when you start your device.

Luck;
Ken

Hi,
In KBStartMenu_07_uninstall.zip, I don’t find the package for firmware 3.15.0 for uninstall KSM from 3.15.0. Where can I find it ?

The files it must restore are the same since some time ago, so you can use the 3.13.1 files without care.

I made a KoboRoot archive with the files of the latest firmware ; I supposed it ran smooth.

Thanks, I'll try it now (I don't connect the Kobo to the computer very often). But I was wondering... If the problem is that nickel is not correctly notified, wouldn't removing and reinserting the card (within nickel) help? Because the truth is it doesn't.

Yes this should definitely help. Since it does not help, there seems to be a different problem. Do you have telnet access to your reader? If you have you could easily check whether the sd gets mounted and nickel does for some reasons not access it, or whether the sd does not get mounted to start with. Checking in this way would be easier as by a log script.

Why not check the mount status using the KSM "Tools/external sd.msh" "show mount info sd.sh", before "start nickel". If that doesn't work maybe one of the remount scripts will set whatever flag is lacking.

Luck;
Ken

One of the times it failed, I could browse the card within KSM, but then the card was invisible when I started nickel. I've been avoiding launching nickel from KSM since then, so I don't have many data points. I'll try to do more tests.

I used to have telnet access, but I probably lost it when I upgraded the firmware and KSM, that's another thing to check.

I am glad you like it. Didn't you have any problems with the installation of the the KSM update files on the Glo HD?

I'm trying to install KSM on my glo hd.

After installing update1 I got the same screen rotation problem. I did a pinhole reset. I checked the files in "local" and "global". They were all there. So far so good (I assume).

So I tried update2. Screen rotation problem. Pinhole reset. Now the device restarted and I've got a white screen.
Pinhole reset doesn't work. Pressing turn off switch for 20 sec. doesn't work, just a white screen
