I've still got shelves and shelves of paper books here, since the local library won't take them, but I'm not buying any new ones, and won't.
Your story is pretty much my story with one minor addition. My Mrs. was the one that told me that "I better get an ereader" due to the fact that we were getting over run by paperbacks. I also refuse to pay more than $8 per paperback, I could care less who wrote it or how good it is, no one is worth more than that. With Kindle Unlimited I don't have to be bothered with hte prices of the books or selecting a bad book, since the penalty for selcting a bad book is $0.

My walking challenge is seriously interfering with my book reading.

That's okay though. I'll pick up again in the fall. And it's not like I'm not reading anything, just not very much.

That's why audio books were invented. I've been listening for only just over a year, but with walking, driving and swimming, I've got through a ton of additional content.

What she said!!

Seriously, this is one of the best arguments for audio books. They really improve your ability to meet something like a walking challenge. More than once over the years I've done an extra walk/run around the lake, or an extra dozen laps in the pool simply because I was in a really good part of a book and didn't want to stop.

I've pondered audio books a lot. I think I'll give a couple a try through the library, but I really do like paying attention to what I am currently doing. I'm a big proponent in trying to be present in what I do.

I stopped listening to music while walking or riding a long time ago. I don't think I'd go back to that for the most part.

Maybe I just read too much now. Did I actually say that on this forum?

I work full-time (avg 43 hrs/week with the occasional 26-hour shift), act as primary chaffeur for my three kids, who go to three different schools (plus various doctor's appointments &etc), and one World Literature class keeps me busy.

It's the last class I need for my Associate's degree in English (transferable to State, in case I really want to torture myself) and thankfully it's almost done.

In fact, I should be working on my last essay right now instead of hanging out here, but...

Everyone who knows me IRL assumes I'm rounding out a BS or Master's. It's almost embarrassing to say, 'no, just an AA... not going to do anything for my career, just want a sheepskin...'

Maybe, perhaps, when I retire again, I'll look at extending that, but I just don't have the time/patience for it right now (nor does Dngrswife).

You mean to say Charlie that there are ware tight MP3 players? Wow I learn something every day. Going to start using MS Word’s spell checker so that I do not make as many spelling mistakes.

Charlie changed my life when he mentioned listening to audio books while swimming! I believe he uses a waterproof case for his iPod, but there are indeed waterproof MP3 players and I love mine. I got asked about it a lot when swimming last summer, too.

Wow, I was told by a pal in the office that he has a friend that he considers to be a tad eccentric who practices under water basket weaving while listening to music or frequently simply likes to relax underwater while reading his current novel on his Kobo H2O. I can imagine the conversation in his home “I’m going in the pool honey to relax underwater and catch up on my reading.” He showed me some photos of the baskets that the friend weaves while underwater.

I'm planning to go ahead with my second themed month in June: women-only month. I did no SF&F in April. It's just a bit of fun, relating to the fact that I've accumulated a number of books by women I want to read soon.

I'm not going to have much trouble with the novels, but my daily short stories are going to be a little trickier. I don't have many collections by women, and I'm not completely sure I'll like the ones I do have. I might have to try to line up some anthologies - I don't want to read them out of order, but I can try to leave myself at the start of a run of stories by women.

I have found that having a monthly theme is nice. In March, I only read from books on hand. While I've been on a book-buying moratorium all year, I was still freely acquiring books from the library.

There are many short story collections in the MobileRead library. I don't know if you have a restriction that you want to read a different author each day, but if not, you'd only need a couple of short story collections to give you enough to read for the month.
