Call it the "post tablet" or "tablet PC" world when the categories merge again.
I think laptops and desktops the best formfactor for traditional style computing. some work simply requires good keybord, big monitors, mouse etc..

But tablets today (ipad and transformer and the like) are also used for real work: doctors, lawyers, writers. Lots written on this. it is a new model and it is another choice for people who only used laptops and desk tops previously and did not need all that power and weight. Not just for comsuption. Real work too.

I think we're seeing the effect of having low-end (e.g. ARM) processor power catching up to office-type applications. My smallest laptop's E350 processor (with SSD & 4 GB RAM) runs MS Office applications in Windows at a pace that is, at least at document start, indistiguishable from my desktop's blazing fast i7.

Most applications don't need anywhere near the power of the leading edge. Tablet capabilities are getting competitive for most uses. Content creation is still an issue. We can solve that with wireless keyboards and mice but then you might as well carry a laptop.

I'm curious to see how the tablet interface evolves further to reduce the need for traditional inputs. I'd still like to see good pen-based (digitizer) input as an option but that adds cost and the software isn't keeping up (unless you only run a particular pen-based app).

I reckon this is doable on Android at least for basic text input (e.g. as a "keyboard" app). On Windows, you can switch from onscreen keyboard to a sort of notepad for handwriting recognition. Works pretty well. For iOS, you'd either have to jailbreak or Apple needs to implement it themselves.

There are some great handwriting apps on iOS. Notability. Notes+, note taker HD, Audionote, Penultimate.

If you are in no hurry, you could consider waiting for the Galaxy Note 10.1

I wonder why they don't say how many iPads were preordered since the quantity available was previously established.

We use tablets at work now...and when I'm out at meetings I see more tablets than laptops (probably 5 tablets to every 3 laptops.) They have already moved beyond just being for "media consumption."

But I don't think that tablets will ever be full-fledged computers - and I think the success of the iPad (and the consequent creation of the mainstream tablet market) is due to the fact that Apple did not try to make them such. Because even if you address performance issues, the screen size will always be the biggest barrier to full computer performance on a tablet. My desktop monitor is not enormously large, but it's the size of maybe 5 iPad screens. Not portable at all, but excellent for viewing two full-sized documents side by side. (And many of my colleagues have 2 (or even 3) monitors at their desks.)

I don't think the tablet is a computer replacement. What it is is a replacement for the *second* computer - the netbook or laptop you use for going to meetings or travel (if that's what your job entails). The computer you have with you mostly for e-mail or to access documents or reference materials which you may or may not need, but which you want to have access to just in case.

Obviously not, but if you sounded interested in handwriting input, and that tablet is designed with that in mind.

It'll be announced soon enough. Apple always discloses their numbers.

But those are dedicated apps, yes? I was thinking more along the lines of being able to use handwriting when posting comments on MobileRead using Safari. Basically, pen/handwriting as another form of input for all apps and not just being limited to dedicated note-taking apps.

Like voice dictation in Android!

Any OS have this right now?
