This must be something to do with the original markup of the book, since the dedrm process doesn't change any of the text of the book at all, apart from removing the encryption.

Thought this might be relevant in this thread check out Gizmodo, they have an article talking about this very subject and the Kindle in particular.

kind of surprised that their info is so outdated and all their links seem to be gone already.

I wonder if Amazon will issue a take-down notice to them though.

The coincidence was what made me post it really

I just finished looking at it, I don't use a Kindle so, I admit I didn't read the entire article, my bad.

This is Gizmodo we are talking about, they are not the New York Times

I'd just like to mention that the developers of these plugins didn't intend them to be used so friends could "share" ebooks. They were meant to be used on ebooks that you, yourself, purchased (or licensed, I won't quibble).

You will have to visit Apprentice Alf's blog - which apparently has been tidied up for easier reading. I guess he de-drm-ed the drm-ing info to make it more like plain text! Oh, and if I am reading into your post correctly, the drm-ing steps might be necessarily performed on the computer that originally held the epub text and its reader.

Oh, I'll adopt the thread that came in while posting my reply!!! ***buzzzzzzz***

It may seem like my post was a light-hearted attempt to get you to word your request a little differently, but I assure you, it wasn't. Please don't use these tools on ebooks that you didn't reimburse the author/publisher for.

Concur. There are libraries if you can't afford to buy at the moment.

So I am trying to decide whether a Kindle will be worth it to me, and I am finding a lot of the books I was specifically looking forward to reading on the Kindle are not available.

For instance, at Kobo I can get:

http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/War-A...XHw/page1.html

but I can't get this Briggs translation of War and Peace at Amazon (and don't bother with any link showing the Briggs version at Kindlebooks-- it looks like it should be Briggs, it describes it as Briggs, but the ultimate download is a Maude translation... fortunately a *free* Maude translation.)

Anyway, would I be able to buy this $11 kobo book and convert it to read on my Kindle with navigation features intact?

Yes. If the ePub has a multi-level TOC it will be flattened for MOBI, but it will still be there.

Hi All,

Given Alf's decision to retire, you may want to grab the latest and greatest version of the just released tools_v3.2.zip as I think some of the other developers there are wondering about what they should do as well and they decided to get what they have out there so that people have it if they need it.

Alf retire?

Say it isn't so!

Edit: the only change I saw in tools 3.2 was in K4mobiDeDRM which went from 1.9 to 2.1. Any other changes? I assume that's the only plug-in that needs to be updated.
