sort of English Duokan

I just had a funny little bug on Duokan. A particular book, in mobi, that works fine in Kindle, would cause Duokan to restart if I tried to open it. Only that book. Could it be something to do with metadata? I couldn't find another mobi that would fail to open like that.

I'll see if today's update works better.

I mean, the Duokan update should appear late tomorrow! The update is supposed to come out on the 20th in China, so that'll be pretty late or even on Sunday for some.

I have tried to make a screen capture, but failed everytime. On one damaged file that cannot be opened - produce a label -white on black backround- Can't open. But on some episode, it restarted, and had trouble coming back. The file may be damaged.

Another is similar, but it shows an empty home page with Z.All X. ...T...? ( the page I have tried to capture ) It looks like something crashes the temporary book in DK_Mbp - believe I once deleted that contents in that folder, and the book was readable again. In other words, the original book in DK_Documents may not be the problem. They error has appeared during some messing around with Zoom, rotation, etc. The DXG model seem underpowered, it takes much longer to render a book compared to the Kindle 3. Your entries are captured in a buffer, and then it may run all those entries while you may try to escape. You simply have to be precise with your inputs and wait for it to catch up.

Hmm.... The submenu that appear if you press the 5-way control, left or right, give you an
option for deleting a book. Perhaps there should be an option to delete the copy in DK_Mbp ?

WARNING:

I have no way of telling what might go wrong, but had me an unpleasant adventure.

I did try to force one error I have seen, in relation to the above. I would try to open a book that has created an error before. The white on black error message appear and then the system is stuck. Or ? - more correctly, you may get out of it by escaping the book, using back-key, home ? ( don't remember )
It is impossible to tell what cause the error - it could be some arrays that get out of bounds or - there can be plenty of reasons.

The dumb thing I did was simply leave it in this uncertain state and forgetting it. Later I plugged in the USB cable, and both the "white on blact error message was seen layered with the USB connection icon/page.

It would not release the with unmounting the device. Something was stuck. I figured that:
a) - if I unplugged USB, while some activity still could be going on ( PC keep attempting to negotiate with the device, this could be bad.
b) - instead, shutting down the PC should close any programs attempting to connect, which I did.
c) - thried many times to reboot the device, but it only showed a blank screen.
d) - perhaps I did a factory reset - holding power button for around 30 seconds. Several tries, and finally it did boot up. Not quite normally the first times, but at the moment things seem to work as before.

Advice - Make sure you get out of some stuck errors if you can before connection USB. All I can say.

Working on some compilations for menus, while that was more work then appreciated.

So far, I've had a download failure on the DLBank link for Kindle2. Got Flip's version (above), which has update.bin files. There is also a Windows installer for USB Network. When I tried setting up the USB network, it worked, but then I could no longer get the normal USB connection to my Kindle to work (I couldn't see my root folder in Kindle.). I don't see you this is a very useful thing for most users, anyway.


If you are updating, just replace the DKSystem folder with the new one, and restart. If you are doing a new install, you'll need to copy all DK folders to root, plus copy the right bin file to Kindle root, then go Menu/setting/menu/update, disconnect and restart).

Everything went smoothly. So far, can't see any difference.

Make a copy of your old DK System file before replacing it with the new one. Then you can simply copy over your dictionary folder to the new system.

I have never had a serious problem, and if - you have the fall-back to the original system. But I realized that the USB might cause some problem.

I just corrected my post, based on what Curstpriest wrote. I guess the update bin is not necessary for an update.

Software install on a Kindle 3G - part 1

The hardware has been started after it was charged, downloaded perhaps a book. Software is version Version 3.0.2.

update/restart - ok

update/restart - ok - toggled to see NiLuJe Screensaver

update_fonts_4.2.N_k3g_install.bin
update/restart - ok - compared with another, 1st Normal,
2nd is after this install. ( had to do a check )

update/restart - fail - see photo.

Pressed R as instruction said, restarted.
Started up without any problem, but Screensaver did no
longer work. It went blank with no image.
(;dumpMessages ->all_logs..about 790Kb)
Menu->system->Restart -ok, screensaver back.

As far as I could tell, things did seem to work.

Downloaded rar-archive from
link #2 in montalex post above - ( tick off the rar-archive and mouse click on that symbol ).

Unpacked the new files to a folder 11月20号发布版本 and traversing it. As this is a new install, - first you may try to figure out the instructions in the PDF file.

You find it in the folder shown in the first picture. ( I may give a translation or wiki one day )
Note what is said here In my case, I am not upgrading an existing system, so I copy the update_duokan_0b006.bin file ( it shoud probably be say install instead of update ) to the root of my USB device. I have already checked my model number in the Settings menu on the Amazon-Kindle. The folder is shown in the next picture. And the last picture shows my USB-Kindle folder with the 3 folders DK_Documents, DK_Pictures, DK_System - note this last folder which actually holds all system files. If upgrading, they say to only copy these 3 folders over. All you need to do. But in reality, you may only do the last folder as the other folders are empty. You may want to keep your books, and pictures of course. It is only that these 3 folders must be present.

Save remove of usb-device and watch it go through a couple of reset cycles - you see the Amazon kid under the tree start up, stop halfway, then some blinking, it may start up again and now you get the Duokan entry page: select 'Q' and it will start up, or the second will start the normal Amazon software.

When it finally comes up, it will look like picture 1. Press menu and the menu-folder appear as seen in 2nd picture. See the dark-lined-cursor at the wrench or at J. ( you may just press J to go there, a fast and quick short-cut in every menu )

Next 4 pictures are the System menu settings. Notice to bottom 1/4 - 2/4 - 3/4 - 4/4. Now, move back to you have 3/4 and move the cursor down to D - just under the date and time - and press the 5-way-key. The next picture shows the menu that appear. It is ticked off on Chinese - why it is impossible to read - move the cursor down to C and enter. As by magic - the page transforms to the next picture with English.

The last couple of pictures show what seem new - WIFI settings. You can turn Wifi on/off by selection, and you can set Settings under the last Advanced settings menu. I get my Wifi up, and normally I would be able to visit a bookstore - but then it fails. A white on black error label appear in the center of the screen. "Can't connect". It will then turn off the Wifi.

EDIT: It got connection. Then it was probably too much traffic or something.

Anyways I don't see why you are installing all of these hacks...
You don't need the jailbreak, you don't need screensaver hack, and you don't need usb networking.

Actually duokan has a custom screensaver thing built into it I think.
It also has USB networking mode built in along if you press 3 while you boot up (I think)

anyways..

Still waiting on an uninstall utility from them, has not yet come~

I have not found/heard anything yet about the uninstall-utility. Only that they will come with one. I need some of the other hacks. I guess I would not have mentioned them unless I had that error. Yes to screensaver, but as far as I know, the 3 is the default setting - not press anything. Maybe an overkill with yet another install, but I may not have that one around later, and may use the images.

It is a photograph as it did not seem possible to do a printscreen. I *used* the update under Settings. Had network turned off during install. But since there were one of these the other day, I tried to document it. Btw. Have you removed the ss-time-hack ?

Btw. The change of google was an result of the fonthack, right ? Was looking for some test.
