And it was OK. 3/5. Looking back over the series, I see that the best I've awarded any of the books is 4/5. Time to abandon this series.

Next up: When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson. My most recent purchase, as it's dropped to just £0.99 at Amazon UK.

Finished Surveyor, book #1 from the Corps of Discovery series by James S. Peet.

Unbeknownst to me when I started the book, this is one of those serial books that just ends abruptly, with the expectation that you will buy the next book to keep reading the story. Sorry, James S. Peet, I won't be doing that. I absolutely hate this abusive tactic that some authors have adopted.

I read the whole book, waiting for something to happen, but it never did. There were a few points where I though something was about to happen, but I got skunked every time. The only unexpected twist was when the book just ended, mid sentence, mid thought.

DNF at 100%. It was not me that Did Not Finish reading it, it was the author who Did Not Finish writing it.

----------

Not sure what I am going to read next. I am considering, but not yet fully decided on, Seed, by Michael Edelson:
Quote:
Fifty people go to sleep in their own beds and wake up in a compound in the middle of the jungle. Men and women from all walks of life with only one thing in common--none of them know where they are or how they got there. Alex is a paratrooper. Yael is a mathematician. Max is a law professor. They can't leave-- a lethal barrier surrounds the facility, but no one knows if it's there to keep them in, or to keep something out.

The compound is comfortable and provides for all of their needs. There's a warehouse with DNA coded locks. Only Barbara, the doctor, can open a fully stocked operating room, and only Alex can get into an arms room with enough weapons to outfit an infantry platoon. There is enough food and other supplies to last for decades, but nothing to tell them who did this to them or why.

For Alex, it's an intriguing mystery--anything is better than digging foxholes in the desert--but he and the others don't realize that time is running out. On the other side of the barrier lies a horror beyond imagination, and the barrier is about to come down.

Which was absolutely delightful. Especially since I've spent many summer holidays on the North Norfolk coast myself. Highly recommended. Better than the film, IMO. A very solid 5/5 from me.

Next up: Not sure.

Placing the Suspect Behind the Keyboard: Using Digital Forensics and Investigative Techniques to Identify Cybercrime Suspects 1st Edition

Placing the Suspect Behind the Keyboard is the definitive book on conducting a complete investigation of a cybercrime using digital forensics techniques as well as physical investigative procedures. This book merges a digital analysis examiner's work with the work of a case investigator in order to build a solid case to identify and prosecute cybercriminals.

Brett Shavers links traditional investigative techniques with high tech crime analysis in a manner that not only determines elements of crimes, but also places the suspect at the keyboard. This book is a first in combining investigative strategies of digital forensics analysis processes alongside physical investigative techniques in which the reader will gain a holistic approach to their current and future cybercrime investigations.

Learn the tools and investigative principles of both physical and digital cybercrime investigations―and how they fit together to build a solid and complete case
Master the techniques of conducting a holistic investigation that combines both digital and physical evidence to track down the "suspect behind the keyboard"
The only book to combine physical and digital investigative techniques

Anyway, I am mostly skimming the above ^^ book since I know most of it as a computer expert but I am also reading this more comprehensively :

Blackhatonomics: An Inside Look at the Economics of Cybercrime

Blackhatonomics explains the basic economic truths of the underworld of hacking, and why people around the world devote tremendous resources to developing and implementing malware. The book provides an economic view of the evolving business of cybercrime, showing the methods and motivations behind organized cybercrime attacks, and the changing tendencies towards cyber-warfare. Written by an exceptional author team of Will Gragido, Daniel J Molina, John Pirc and Nick Selby, Blackhatonomics takes practical academic principles and backs them up with use cases and extensive interviews, placing you right into the mindset of the cyber criminal.

Historical perspectives of the development of malware as it evolved into a viable economic endeavour
Country specific cyber-crime analysis of the United States, China, and Russia, as well as an analysis of the impact of Globalization on cyber-crime
Presents the behind the scenes methods used to successfully execute financially motivated attacks in a globalized cybercrime economy
Provides unique insights, analysis, and useful tools for justifying corporate information security budgets
Provides multiple points of view, from pure research, to corporate, to academic, to law enforcement
Includes real world cybercrime case studies and profiles of high-profile cybercriminals

Thanks for reading my book! I hope that you will enjoy it. I hope to have a second edition out next year.

I agree with your statement that 'bad' guys can use the information, but I have found throughout my law enforcement career, that anyone, and I mean anyone no matter how much they are aware of investigative methods and tactics, will fall for them practically every time. It is just too difficult to discover if you are a target of a sting operation until it is too late.

The only safety for cybercriminals is that there are not enough investigators to investigate all of them.

Thanks again!

Still savoring the Rebecca West above. Also listening to Dr. Thorne, the third book in the Chronicles of Barsetshire by Anthony Trollope.

Who narrated Thorne? I listened to Simon Vance, although Timothy West is my favorite Trollope narrator.

After a stretch in which I listened to all six Palliser novels and the first two Barsetshire novels, I found Dr. Thorne to be a colossal letdown.

I am listening to the Simon Vance version. I am not finding it a letdown, as I still like the turns of phrase, but it is somewhat predictable. You could see the plot ending coming from the setup.

Finished Stranger from the Sea. Good stuff. The TV series has now split from the books, as they are in the ten-year gap in the novels.

I just finished L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s The Mage-Fire War. This was number 21 in the Recluce Series and another excellent read. I have just started Jeff Shaara's Gone For Soldiers. This is his excellent historical novel of the Mexican American War of 1846. So far it is as good as the others I have read by him.

I quite enjoyed his Imager series, but got bogged down in the first couple of books of the Recluce series and never went further. Perhaps I should reconsider?

I just finished Ruth Ware's The Turn of the Key. It was a good mystery, sometimes a bit too obvious when trying to make someone a suspect. It was a quick read, though it took me a week to finish, but life happened. 7.5/10
