Good morning, all! The roads have become rivers, the streets now oceans! So much water flowing everywhere. It's still early morning on Saturday so no one is out celebrating yet, but the streets look so clean from all the water yesterday. Another few hours and it will take a car 3 hours to travel 2 kilometers, and all-day event just to ride along the moat surrounding the Old City, and a VERY wet ride that will be!

I'm fortifying with a few cups of Viang Joom On's "English Breakfast" tea, some rice and left-over Cajun Chicken from last night's dinner. I'll walk down to the Old City again today, taking more pictures. I've got my money and mini iPad in a plastic bag, my phone in a LifeProof case, and my camera in a scuba housing. Bathing suit and a T-shirt, and of course my own water pistol, and I'm ready to play. Two days of water fights will be more than enough for me, but the party will continue until Tuesday. The Thais do like to party!

Diet coke as I work LATE into the night. The push is on. I promised this thing ALL INby Monday. It may well be Monday midnight in Hawaii, but it will be Monday somewhere!

A glass of rum as I throw away hundreds of water-logged photos! I shot over 500 images today, and will keep perhaps 4... But what a delightful day! When it's 37°c (about 98°f) outside, what could be better than to be constantly sprayed with cool water? The holiday is just getting underway but already thousands of people are in the street. The traffic is almost at a standstill downtown as truck-loads of party people throw buckets of water at the crowds on the sidewalks and receive bucket-loads back from them. Happy wet mayhem to celebrate the new year! Lots of foreigners in town for the festival, and I made sure to pass through the backpack traveler's area too. Same there... lots of very wet westerners, busy throwing water at each other and anyone who passes by. The foreign women tend to wear a LOT less clothing for Songkran than the Thais (Thai women are extremely Victorian in their dress... unless they are 'working.') I stayed there for an extra hour, and left before anyone was too drunk to appreciate

Looks like fun. Having a Duclaw Hellrazer while LM naps. It is a gorgeous day. LM spent the morning outside playing so he went down for a nap pretty easily. Life is good.

I love that there was a band up on the stage when all this was going on. It looks like a lot of fun. Is there usually any trouble, requiring police, during this time, Stitchawl?

Windy today, but it may be nice enough to get out and do some yard work. Sumatra coffee in my cup while I wait for my waffles.

Good morning, everyone! It's begun! Firecrackers are going off all over town and it's only 8am! It's 'officially' the beginning of the Songkran (New Years) holiday, despite the fact that people began celebrating two days ago. Today the festivities really get under way! I'm bracing for it with a mug or two of unbranded Keemun tea, some home-made bread, and a bunch of different 'little bits' to eat, as I get my camera ready, sealed back up in its scuba housing, to go out and join the fun!

Yesterday there were at least four stages set up around the moat. There will be a dozen more playing today, all around the downtown area. Most had water canons spraying out over the crowds, lots of drums, huge speakers, and horrible music blasting out at 3 trillion decibels (at least!) Unfortunately, yes... While this really IS a religious holiday, where people 'should' just 'sprinkle' a few drops of water on your shoulder while wishing you 'Sawasdee Pi Mai!' (Happy New Year,) because of the extreme heat, it has morphed into a free-for-all water throwing day... with lots of drinking (even though that has been officially banned.) Throw in a lot of young Western foreigners who come just for 'the water fight,' a lot of Chinese tourists who don't realize that there is NO PLACE where you will stay dry except inside your hotel, and you see a lot of tempers flaring, especially later in the day. Here's a 'grab shot' I took yesterday of an angry Chinese tourist who foolishly drove his motorbike around town and thought he could stay dry. While many of the Thais would understand and respect the fact that he was wearing a rain coat, driving though a group of 30 foreigners was NOT a good way to stay dry... or happy.

Home again with a late afternoon mug of Taylors of Harrogate's 'Yorkshire' tea! I don't think I've ever been as wet as I was today! Even when diving! Unbelievable. And I was mistaken... There weren't ' a dozen more' bands today. There were at least THREE dozen more bands today, many of them side by side, playing (different songs) at the same time at full volume. Right now there are two bands playing down on the street about two blocks away from me... and even without my hearing aids I can hear them clearly. I can feel the vibrations from the bass moving my desk! Traffic was at a complete standstill on all four sides of the moat, filled with pick-up trucks, 'tuk-tuks,' and scooters, all with laughing people throwing buckets of water or squirting big waterguns at each other. I even discovered a water gun that was modeled after me!

Looks just like me too, except my eyes are brown...

And I think I've had my fill of the New Year's festivities, although it will continue like this until Tuesday.

Sparkling water. Have moved the horses through three paddocks, dealt with some compost that isn't correctly, and about to lay down for a bit as I'm not supposed to be walking. In fact I think I'll have a wee brandy to boot

Good morning, everyone! Tea for two this morning, a good mug of East India Company's "English Breakfast" tea, then once more into the breech! I had some new ideas for photos yesterday... just as I ran out of battery! (I didn't want to open the camera housing and take the chance of things getting wet while I changed it.) We'll go back today, brave the ravaging hordes, and see if I can get those photos. After all, Sangkran only comes once a year!

Once more into the breech... Man the battlements, protect the walls...

Actually, you can just make out the cop chasing people OFF the walls (that surround the Old City.) Too many people were falling off into the moat on the other side!
