It's the same in Dutch. Whenever I say 'me and my sister' (ik en mijn zus) my father yells: it's 'my sister and I' (mijn zus en ik)! The donkey always comes last!

That seems to be a slightly different mistake. If (in a quick google) I've got the Dutch pronouns right, "me and my sister" is the equivalent of the Dutch "mij en mijn zus".

Although it's also true in English that "I and my sister" just doesn't sounds right.

It's the same grammatical mistake I think:
me and my sister vs my sister and me (or my sister and I, which seems to be the correct way to say this)
ik en mijn zus vs mijn zus en ik

Just like 'I and my sister' doesn't sound right, 'mij en mijn zus' doesn't sound right either.

I should have written:
Quote:
Whenever I say 'me and my sister' (ik en mijn zus) my father yells: it's 'my sister and me' (mijn zus en ik)!

Ahem, Iridal, Dutch is not Flemish as you know! I like Flemish for its unusual words that we don't know or use in the Dutch language.

I learned that it is not polite to put your name/person first in a sentence: so never ' I and my sister' but always 'my sister and I' .

Well, I'm pretty sure we have the same grammatical rules. In school we were taught 'algemeen Nederlands'. But I totally agree, Flemish sounds so much better than Dutch

My parents live right next to the border. They go shopping in Hulst. One time I found a dictionary Dutch - Flemish. Subtitle: van ambetanterik tot zwanzen. I thought that was really funny. Those are words I use often, but I never thought about the fact that the Dutch don't understand those words.

(A couple of weeks ago, a Dutch friend told me the Flemish accent is really charming. I'm guessing he never heard anyone from the West of Flanders talking ).

Yes, our Dutch sounds so much harder and impolite in my ears than Flemish. Flemish really has a more softer and lovelier sound to the ear.

Ooops. You're completely right in correcting me. I studied English so I shouldn't make mistakes like this! My only excuse is that it was nearly 3am after a long day and I didn't reread before posting .

Well, I didn't study English, but hobble along without grammar- or dictionary, as I equally do with German, French, a bit of Spanish and a few words of Italian; so all, bear with me and I don't mind correcting from any one

That's a nice thing to do on a sunday; having breakfast with your mom. I would like a 4 1/2 minute egg please.
Take care, Betty and greetings from overseas to your mother.
