Amazon only allows KU titles on devices capable of using their Kindle and Audible apps. That way, Amazon has complete control in reference to proper returns and deletions. Putting titles on non-approved devices would be theft.

Thanks for confirming. I can only get it on my iPad, which is kinda cumbersome to lug around for listening. I have the Audible app on my Samsung Galaxy player but it doesn't seem like I can get the KU audiobooks on there.

Now that Kindle Unlimited is out, I updated the post on borrowing Kindle books to qualify for Whispersync pricing. It's linked in the OP.

How to Borrow Kindle Books to Qualify for Reduced Whispersync Pricing

One of the best features of the Kindle ecosystem is Whispersync for Voice. This feature allows you to sync qualifying Kindle ebooks with corresponding Audible books. The big plus here is that the audiobooks can be purchased at a reduced price (sometimes, greatly reduced).

To qualify for this reduced pricing, you must first own the Kindle ebook. Besides buying it, you can also borrow it to qualify. Amazon considers three forms of borrowing as ownership (Kindle Unlimited, public libraries, and the lend/borrow feature). The fourth form of borrowing (Kindle Owners' Lending Library) does not qualify.

Do you have the Kindle app on the Samsung? The same device has to have both the Kindle app and the Audible app for the KU audiobooks to work.

Let me ask the obvious first. Are both apps up to date? and are you saying that a KU audiobook that shows on the iPad's Audible app isn't showing on the SGP5's Audible app?

Don't the Galaxy Player's run Gingerbread (2.3)? Android devices need at least 4.0 & iOS devices at least v 6.0 in order to work with KU free narration.

Quote:
Why isn't my free narration showing up in my Audible app?

In order to see your Kindle Unlimited free narration content in the cloud on your device, you must be running one of the following supported software versions.

For Audible Mobile Apps, you must be running the following versions (or higher):
Audible for iOS: 2.0.14
Audible for Android 1.5.7
Audible for Windows Phone 7.1.4.8 (Windows Phone 7) / 8.1.4.8 (Windows Phone 8)

For Kindles, the operating system software must be up to date.

IMPORTANT: Note that the following devices will not be able to utilize Kindle Unlimited and the content will not show in the cloud:

Kindle Fire 1st gen
Any Android OS devices not running OS 4.0 or higher
Any iOS device not running OS 6.0 or higher

Yep; the Galaxy Players stopped at Gingerbread. That explains why it won't work.

Suggestion for you since you don't have a small compatible mobile device. Get yourself a no-contract Android phone. Make sure it has at least 1GB of RAM, 4-8GB of storage and a mSD card slot. Avoid anything less than that. You should be able to get a Galaxy phone for under $50 if you catch the right sale and definitely at that price on Black Friday. Keep it in airplane mode. You now have a Galaxy Player that runs Android 4+ and more importantly, KU audiobooks.

Or you can get the Go Phone that I have Nokia Lumina 520. It is a Windows phone. The Audible app runs fine on it. You don't have to activate it and use it as a phone.

I got mine for $40 on the AT&T web site.

That's another option too.

No contract phones with small screens and priced under $50 make great audio players. The OS should last several years before apps start having issues. At that point, replace it with a newer model.

This is kind of what I want, a no-contract unlocked phone, under $100. I bought an unlocked Pantech Crossover last year, based on recommendations here at MR, but it's Android 2.2, and too many apps won't work anymore. I do use the Pantech as a phone too.

So many of the listings at Amazon don't even mention which Android version the phone is using. It's beyond annoying.

I was looking at these:
But I never heard of BLU and haven't done any research yet.

Never heard of that brand. Personally, I'd hold out for at least 1 GB of RAM. These have 512 MB.

Last Black Friday, I bought a Samsung Galaxy Ring for about $50. I gave it to my son to replace his aging iPod touch 3.

Samsung Galaxy Ring
  • Android -- 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • CPU: 1.4 GHz -- single-core Snapdragon S2
  • RAM: 1.0 GB
  • Storage: 4 GB -- mSD card slot
  • Display: 4" -- 800x480 -- 233 ppi
  • Cams: 1.3 MP -- 5 MP
Great media player for the price. This should easily last 2-3 years before the OS won't run newer apps. This pricing is in Sansa Clip territory, so replacements won't be painful. Final cost will be less than $2 per month.
