That is going to be a shame. My K4BNT (whether it is considered 4th gen or 5th gen I still don't understand) is still in great shape and I still use it. Yes, I tend to use my Oasis 3 or PW5 more but there are times the K4BNT goes with me instead. And of course, the K4BNT still downloads azw3 instead of kfx...which I'm sure they want to eliminate. I do wonder how many active PW1s there are. Might influence "when" Amazon makes that decision.

Not every ebook sold by Amazon has a pirated copy, I'm pretty sure.

That is worse than I thought. If the battery drains that fast when not in use then it is definitely on its way out.

The live connection for the above software might be for the epub to audiobook feature included. As to how they convert to epub who knows. Hopefully it's not just a copy on dedrm software. And they actually have found their own way to decrypt. Then it ads another way to get books freed. Though I still prefer dedrm and will try wait out fir a new version to come out hopefully . (fingers crossed) but who knows how long that will take. Then the cat and mouse game will continue with Amazon updating software.

It doesn't give any details on the specific version of Kindle for PC required. If it does require a specific older version that would point to it just being a DeDRM wrapper like Epubor. If that is the case it should really be mentioned in their product info.

For now I am going to assume that it works with the latest version 2.7.1.

From the step-by-step description of how it works it appears that the book download needs to be initiated by their software. It is not clear whether that is just for user convenience in not needing to operate the K4PC UI or if that is crucial to how it works. It is possible that their software interferes with the way that K4PC operates, like the older methods that used to work for disabling KFX downloads.

I am certainly interested in the free trail next Monday to see how well it works, but I doubt I would ever purchase it. Knowing what version of K4PC is used, whether it works on newly published books, and seeing the results will likely give clues to how they are doing it.

If they are using the latest K4PC then that would likely be part of it, but more would be required beyond that.

Thanks. Technically mine is 5th gen then, but according to the amazon software page, both run 4.1.4...so if I had to guess, if Amazon does drop support, I'm guessing both releases of this one at the same time.

i just posted about the bookfab in another section and was directed here. I don't know any programming, but with it stating that the large files take longer to convert, i was curious if maybe they are using their AI stuff (like the audio book prog) to copy/paste from the original

K4BNT has thrown me.

K4BNT = Kindle 4 Black non-touch. There was a 4th generation touch only model, but they also released a non-touch (I was told today it was in a gray color) and then they later released a non-touch Black one. The black one is kinda considered a 5th gen but also isn't...it shares the same firmware as the gray one. So basically there is a K4T/KT (Kindle Touch) and a K4NT (non-touch) and a K4BNT sometimes called a K5. I think! I have the black non-touch and I don't know whether to call it K4BNT or K5!

There is a wiki linked at the top of the page but don't know about a list of abbreviations per se.

Thank you. Since there seems to be a hair dryer, adhesive, and prying instrument involved in getting the case open and the battery out, I'm worried I will break the Kindle in the process. When you add the uncertain future utility, I agree with you about holding off. When the battery won't hold a charge for more than a few days, I may consider attempting the battery replacement then (since I'll have nothing to lose if I break it), unless indications from Amazon are that the K4BNT's demise is imminent.

KDX - Kindle Deluxe, part of the 2nd gen

K3/Kindle Keyboard/KK - 3rd gen Kindle with full keyboards

K4NT/K4BNT/K5NT - Kindle4 No Touch/ Kindle 4 Black No Touch etc, 4th and 5th gens with 4directional buttons (aka D-pad), no touchscreen.

KT/K4 - Kindle Touch, the first touchscreen.

PW - Paperwhite.

KV - Kindle Voyage

KOA - Kindle Oasis

PWSE - Paperwhite Signature Edition.

CS - Kindle ColorSoft

At least, that's what I've come to know as the common acronyms. Might be different in other places.
