Half rain, half sleet - just in time to really mess up the roads for Christmas travel.

And from the snow and winds yesterday Shel, our somewhat long, set back from the road driveway is snow-drifted shut! My husband couldn't get out to go to his newly acquired job, an hour and a half away in Davenport! I hope he still has a job when work resumes next year!!

We've got a layer of ice, topped by a layer of slush, with more ice on top.
My street has been closed to motor vehicles because it is an extremely steep hill and is now dangerous. My daughter took me shopping then parked the car. We emptied the shopping out and the car slid downhill for a few feet. So she reparked. Then the same thing happened again. Then she tried to move it somewhere safer and another driver skidded into the middle of her car. Luckily, there's not much damage to either car but the police showed up and said that no-one else should try to drive round here and put barriers up. Then I tried to carry the shopping down my very steep drive. My partner hadn't bothered to shovel the snow/slush/ice because "it would thaw soon" and "it's not meant to snow in December, so it won't last." Naturally, I fell and wrenched my knee a bit. I strapped the knee up then shovelled the drive and gritted it. (The partner is in London today. I rang him and gave him my opinion of his inaction.) My mother is supposed to be coming here for Christmas and I don't think that we can safely get her wheelchair down the hill, never mind the drive, unless there's a thaw. |

![]() I hope you get your thaw, and I'm sorry to hear about the general suckiness. We're very warm here, and quite humid. I'm hoping the wind doesn't change NE because there's a big bushfire in the National Park, and the smoke is thick and low (as my sister will attest - the wind is blowing it all her way). The weather means the pool will be getting a workout tomorrow (adults, kids and dogs) as will the air-conditioning (well, not the upstairs one, because it's still broken seeing as the wrong part was delivered earlier in the week). Very soon I will go test the pool again (not with a water-testing kit - just with my body ![]() Tonight The Loved One and I will be cooling down on the balcony at sunset each with a nice, large, cool glass of a 2002 De Bortoli Noble One. Today he just received news that, as the company he works for (and I once worked for) has been sold, his services will no longer be required, from about the end of June next year (though his contract should be paid out to mid-2012). This is good news in almost every way (some marginally concerning, but the good is still good, and the inevitability and unchangeability means it's important to make the most of the good than chew on and worry the bones of the bad). Cheers, Marc |

There's 5 cms of snow on the ground, and the thermometer is at -4C and falling. I expect to have the first white Christmas in my life in the morning...
Merry Christmas, y'all, and please turn up the thermostat..... |
