I've started reading Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. I read it in high school but only vaguely remember it.

Just finished Skyborn by David Dalglish, a recent purchase.

I picked this up because the blurb sounded interesting and overall this was a good read. It took about 175 pages before things became interesting and I was worried the entire book was an "intro" into the trilogy but it wasn't so. The main characters were fleshed out enough that they acted like teenagers. The action detailed and exciting. Be prepared for a lot of death and sorrow. However sadly, the book ends on a minor cliffhanger so I'll read the follow-up sometime down the road. Nothing here truly memorable but it's a solid C [3 stars].

And yet the very start of the first book mentions "Guy Fawkes' Night" (which coincidentally is tomorrow). Will that be familiar to American children?

I find the idea that children will be put off a book by the introduction of things unfamiliar to them to be a slightly condescending one, I must admit.

I agree. A read a lot at a young age precisely because I wanted to be introduced to as many new and unfamiliar things as possible. That included words, ideas and cultures.

If all you ever read is something dumbed down to ensure that it doesn't actually challenge you to LEARN something, what's the point. And the idea that children can't handle new words or concepts? That's just WRONG. In so many ways it's hard to even start!

Mrs Lovejoy in The Simpsons was continually crying: "Think of the children!" Whereas it's we poor adults that need thinking about. And far too often we poor adults responsible for excessive dumbing down for kids because we would really much rather they didn't understand ... thank you very much!

Couldn't get into a book since Thursday, when I finished the Integral Trees by Larry Niven. Don't have the second book in the series (yet), and I didn't feel like reading it anyway (didn't really feel like reading Integral Trees either, but had to read something!). So, after a long search (took me the entire weekend...), I finally decided on Calculating God by Robert J. Sawyer. Should have thought of him earlier! (I felt like reading humour, with a touch of sci-fi which takes place in the near future, a very difficult category to find

)

Just finished The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor. It was sort of creepy and a slow burn. Not a Stephen King level of creepiness but it was okay.

I usually have that problem right after reading LoTR, hah. It often turns into a month-long dry spell.

I haven't broken 100 yet, so it is likely I will not make my goal again this year. I may have to revise downward for next year's challenge.

Finished the novella War Cry by Brian McClellan. I'm guessing it's going to be a new serial published by Tor.

This was an enjoyable military sci-fi/fantasy. The created world had that who-can-you-trust feel to it. A small twist here and there made this more interesting and, hopefully, memorable if/when the next in series is published. Rated C [3 stars].

Next is The Glimpses of the Moon by Edmund Crispin, his last book published just before his death written over 20 years since his previous one.

Yesterday I finished Becky Chambers' Record of a Spaceborn Few. It wasn't as tightly focused in terms of plot and characters as the other two books in her universe were. Yet it was still an intriguing exploration of the culture she's created. I did like how she tied the lives of the characters she introduces together. I hope she writes more in this universe.

Pondering what I want to read next...
