At least you know you've got a couple of months! There is a big push here in the States due to economics to do a lot of short-term contracts it seems, though the job market does seem to be getting a bit better the last 6-12 months...

Over here they terminate the short-term contract, wait a few months and then rehire against lower wages. That's what happened to my daughter and her student-job.
There are still a lot of firms closing down and the houses don't sell easily.
