But no, at 41 you're 'too old'. Yeah, you might be too old to start out as a construction worker, but as a knowledge worker or some sort of managing position, you're not even halfway to your pension.

I'm doing a master, just because I want to, but sometimes I wonder if it's of any use. It looks like companies only want to hire people up to 40 and then discard them, except if you're some sort of big-shot manager, project leader, or politician. Then you can suddenly keep working until you're 78 and age never is a problem.

Good luck, and I hope the tide turns for you and your husband as soon as may be.
Good luck on your master! I'm sure it will be well worth it.

Not only did he get his degree. He did it while working a full time factory job 40+ hours a week. He used his GI Bill to pay for it. He is prior military. He was in the USAF for 9 years. He has applied to hundreds of positions and done a few interviews. It's just crazy. He has never before had any problems of finding steady work.

Thanks I hope it's worth it. While I'm not yet 40+, it won't be half a decade anymore before I reach that 'you're not worth anything anymore' (according to companies) age. I just hope having a master gives me some options I otherwise wouldn't have had.

What work did he do in the USAF? Someone who can be in the military/air force for 9 years, and can do a bachelor (in what field?) besides working a 40 hour job, must be worth something.

In the Netherlands, many people who were in the military before go into law enforcement, and if they have a bachelor or higher (*ANY* bachelor, just to prove that you can function on at least that level), they can get into command positions fairly quickly by doing courses.

Also, I've seen people do steps in between: military -> security guard (+study) -> law enforcement (+ courses) -> commanding officer

Could that be an option for your husband? He already did the studying part to get his bachelor.

I'm just throwing around some ideas around.

I've lived in my new apartment for about three weeks. The unit has 12 tennants. When I moved in I was told there is no assigned parking. So Wednesday I come home from getting some groceries, park the car and take the groceries in. Thursday morning I take the dog out for a walk and notice someone has parked so close to me I can't open the driver's side doors. I didn't think much of it. Friday..same thing. Saturday (yesterday) I go out and the car is still parked there. WTF..I have no idea who's car this is so I put a note on the front door asking whoever's car it is, please move it. I need to get out.
Fast forward a couple of hours and one of the ladies living here raps on my door and has my note, saying she knows who's car it is that is blocking me. And that he did it on purpose because I was in "his spot". Really??

I go downstairs and rap on his door. I tried to be nice, asking him if he could please move his car. He barks at me that I parked in his spot and don't do it again. I tell him I was under the assumption that there were NO assigned spots. He tells me he doesn't give a damn..it's his spot. I said fine, I'll never go near his car again but move it for now, I need to get out today. It took him 2 hours but he finally moved it. I want to deflate his damn tires. I should have called the cops. Not that they would have done anything. Maybe have the car towed. That would have been perfect.

Rant over..

Geeze, what a freaking jerk. Did you call/knock on door of the person who rented you the apartment? Landlord, super, whatever? To ask what the hell is going on?

The managers of the apartment are not on sight. Called but got voice mail. They apparently don't work on the weekends.

Maybe I'm the exception but I've come to understand that there are both the official rules (no reserved spaces) but also the unofficial community rules (Joe ALWAYS parks in that spot) and part of moving into a new area is learning those rules and adopting to them.

Yup, that's kind of how it works in my neighborhood. The two spaces directly in front of my house belong to me, even though they are on a public street.

My last house was near the Aloha Stadium, on game nights all of those unofficial rules were void, and I often didn't have a parking place at home. I had to drive down to the mall and take a bus home.

Virtually every place I've ever lived that didn't have official spaces had unofficial ones. I agree with Peter -- it's very likely what you're running in to. BUT, that being said, the way to handle it is not to block someone's car in, but to leave a polite "excuse me, but this is 'my spot' and I'd appreciate it if you'd use a different spot for your car." I rarely found the need to resort to keying someone...

ETA: Oh, and I do agree - the guy was a jerk, in case that wasn't clear in my original post.

Yeah, jerks are jerks.

In the garden apartment complex I lived in back in the 80s, the parking lot was behind the building. For about 7 years I parked in the space immediately behind my apartment, in line with my deck and rear entrance.

Then the guy in the upstairs apartment got caught cheating and his wife left him. She was a nurse with early hours, so she had been parking at the back of the lot, lined up with the exit. His girlfriend moved in, she took "his" space, and he took "my" space -- reserving it by leaving the snow plow attachment to his pickup truck there when he was out.

I knew I would be leaving in a year, so I took his wife's old spot. It wasn't too inconvenient, and I did get out quicker in the morning.

Still, jerks are jerks. It's a waste of time talking to some people.

It would almost have been worth buying a snow plow attachment even if you didn't have a truck so you could have parked your attachment next to his in the space.

Well, I can't imagine why anyone would choose Bleen.
Grue is clearly the only possible choice for any self-respecting person.
