um... sophisticated? Nah! It's more like Monty Python meets Conan.

But I do agree that the books are well worth reading.

Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser can be witty. But Mont Python? I don't think so.

Apparently five of the six Signature Editions are $0.99 in the US this month - the odd one out is the Q Continuum volume. No sign as yet of the UK reductions for May.

And as today is May the 4th, the omnibus of the original three Star Wars movie novelisations is currently 99p in the UK.

Star Wars Trilogy

Un Lun Dun by China Miéville is $1.99 on Amazon.com (for several weeks now).

This is a YA novel about an alternate London and a what happens when a prophesied Chosen One failing in their task. (At least that's what I remember from a review)
Quote:
What is Un Lun Dun?

It is London through the looking glass, an urban Wonderland of strange delights where all the lost and broken things of London end up . . . and some of its lost and broken people, too–including Brokkenbroll, boss of the broken umbrellas; Obaday Fing, a tailor whose head is an enormous pin-cushion, and an empty milk carton called Curdle. Un Lun Dun is a place where words are alive, a jungle lurks behind the door of an ordinary house, carnivorous giraffes stalk the streets, and a dark cloud dreams of burning the world. It is a city awaiting its hero, whose coming was prophesied long ago, set down for all time in the pages of a talking book.

When twelve-year-old Zanna and her friend Deeba find a secret entrance leading out of London and into this strange city, it seems that the ancient prophecy is coming true at last. But then things begin to go shockingly wrong.
A History of Glitter and Blood by Hannah Moskowitz is $1.99 on Amazon.com

YA novel about teen faeries trying to survive a war
Quote:
Sixteen-year-old Beckan and her friends are the only fairies brave enough to stay in Ferrum when war breaks out. Now there is tension between the immortal fairies, the subterranean gnomes, and the mysterious tightropers who arrived to liberate the fairies. But when Beckan's clan is forced to venture into the gnome underworld to survive, they find themselves tentatively forming unlikely friendships and making sacrifices they couldn't have imagined. As danger mounts, Beckan finds herself caught between her loyalty to her friends, her desire for peace, and a love she never expected. This stunning, lyrical fantasy is a powerful exploration of what makes a family, what justifies a war, and what it means to truly love.

Sounds like something I'd like to sample, but there's no Kindle version in my country. I may have to read the Look Inside when I have time.

This month's Star Trek bargains are now live in the UK. 99p each as ever.

All three books in the Errand of Fury trilogy by Kevin Ryan. The final book features a new novelisation of the TOS Season 1 episode Errand of Mercy. Unsurprisingly it's Klingons all the way.

All seven books in the Gateways series from 2001, which features one novel for each of the TV series then made, plus a New Frontier entry and one featuring the USS Challenger. If you're tempted by any of those, remember to buy the seventh book, What Lay Beyond, because that's the only place to find the conclusions to each of the first six books in the series. For some curious reason Pocket didn't do any more series like this after the stink caused by the What Lay Beyond hardback...

And lastly, all three books in the Destiny trilogy by David Mack, which are set after Deep Space Nine and Nemesis and focus on Captains Picard, Riker and Dax as the Federation faces another Borg invasion.

Aurora Rising (Previously published as The Prefect) by Alastair Reynolds for £0.99 at amazon.co.uk and Google play (also available to other European countries e.g. Sweden).

Spoiler:
A rollercoaster ride through the dark and turbulent universe of REVELATION SPACE: an interstellar thriller where nothing - and no one - is what they seem ...

Tom Dreyfus is a Prefect, a policeman of sorts, and one of the best. His force is Panoply, and his beat is the multi-faceted utopian society of the Glitter Band, that vast swirl of space habitats orbiting the planet Yellowstone. These days, his job is his life.

A murderous attack against a Glitter Band habitat is nasty, but it looks to be an open-and-shut case - until Dreyfus starts looking under some stones that some very powerful people would really rather stayed unturned. What he uncovers is far more serious than mere gruesome murder: a covert takeover bid by a shadowy figure, Aurora (who may once have been human but certainly isn't now), who believes the people of the Glitter Band should no longer be in charge of their own destiny.

Dreyfus discovers that to save something precious, you may have to destroy part of it.

It shows up for a similar price at amazon.com for me, but I suspect it may not be available to US buyers since I cannot find the book on ereaderiq.

In the US, it's listed under The Prefect title, but not currently at a discount.

Fancy Free by Pam Uphoff

I have read this and enjoyed it.

In the last parts of the Twenty-first century, AI, Artificial Intelligence is commonplace. Highly able computers, and nothing more . . . until some rare and as yet unidentified trigger creates an actual personality.

Artificial Personalities, APs or hals, are illegal. Destroyed upon discovery. Even Beowulf, the AP the government controls, and uses to hunt down emerging hals, isn't legally recognized, has no right to existence.
So you'd think that when the Special Grid Security Unit started paying extra attention to the area where a certain cooking show operates, Fancy Farmer—the AP who runs the show—would be concerned.
But Fancy has a bigger problem.
She's been stolen.
