An American classic, here's another Halloween favorite:

FREE -- The Legend of Sleepy Hollow -- Washington Irving/ Chip Doc --> 1.4 hrs/ R-3.8

Quote:
Download one of our favorite Librivox recordings of all time! It's a great short story to listen to. The book was written by Washington Irving, one of the first acclaimed American authors. It tells the tale of a Dutch settlement called Sleepy Hollow which is haunted by the legend of a Headless Horseman. This story is read by Chip at LibriVox and his narration is magnificent. It's available on MP3 & bookmarkable MPEG-4 download along with a free PDF eBook.

Description by Chip at Librivox: The quiet Dutch community of Sleepy Hollow lay in the Adirondack mountains on the western shore of the mighty Hudson River in America’s colonial period. The solitude of the woods was breathtaking, and not even a schoolmaster was immune from the eerie miasma which everyone knew permeated the dense forest. Written in 1820, Washington Irving’s The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow has become a classic of American literature, and has been retold in many different ways. Here is the original, from Irving’s own hand.

Audible has four Megan Abbott books on sale through November 4, $4.95 each, members only. These are in the suspense/thriller category.

The books are Die a Little, The End of Everything, Dare Me, and The Fever. Die a Little, Abbott's first book, is feminine noir. The other three reflect Abbott's later shift to novels exploring the lives and secrets of teenage girls (but they are NOT YA books).

I'm a big fan of Megan Abbott, and I've listened to all of these. I especially recommend The End of Everything and Dare Me; The Fever was a bit of a disappointment.

  • Vampire Wardens Trilogy by Lisa Renee Jones
    Quote:
    Includes all THREE Vampire Wardens books.

    A series connected to the Werewolf Society.

    In blood they will find destiny and the eternal bond of passion ...

    HOT VAMPIRE KISS
    The werewolf population is entrenched in a century long war, and now they are plagued by a virus that is turning wolves into killers. The Brooks brothers pursue one such rogue werewolf to Temple, Texas. It is in Temple that Evan encounters a beautiful nurse named Marissa who instantly melts the hundred years of ice running through his veins. When she is brutally attacked by the wolf, he breaks the rules of the Vampire Council and uses his blood to save her. Now, if he doesn't kill the wolf by the next full moon, Marissa will become a killer wolf, and he will be sentenced to death.

    HOT VAMPIRE SEDUCTION
    The underground vampire population of Austin, Texas has taken to hosting orgies with human women who've been forced to indulge in a new aphrodisiac. The drug, Blood Red, is a mixture of a rare type of werewolf blood and that of a vampire. Blood Red creates an insatiable desire for sec in the user to the point of pain in the absence of pleasure. Sometimes that pain leads to death.

    Vampire Warden, Aiden Brooks, has spent more than a hundred years enforcing the laws of his race, and life has taught him that anyone that he allows into his world ends up dead. Despite knowing this all too well, having painfully loved and lost in his past, when his search for the creater of Blood Red places coroner Kelly Riggs directly in both his path, and that of a dangerous clan of vampires, his desire for her goes well beyond offering her protection. He's drawn to her bravery, seduced by he feisty spirit and beauty, but he is determined to resist her, fearing he will put her in harm's way. But Kelly is already on the radar of the enemy, and when she gets too close to the evil vampire clan's secrets, she is given Blood Red. Now Aiden's hunger for her might be the only thing that can keep her alive but who will save her from him?

    HOT VAMPIRE TOUCH
    In blood they will find destiny and the eternal bond of passion...

    A Vampire Warden betrayed by a werewolf he loved, turned into something not Vampire or Wolf. The woman - the wolf - who will heal him... if he doesn't destroy them both first...

£1.99 -- Dark Matter -- Michelle Paver/ Jeremy Northam --> 6.1 hrs/ R-4.2 --> horror

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible (£1.99) | Kindle (£0.99)

January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as a specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

As the young men set sail from a gloomy Britain on the verge of war, Jack feels the overwhelming excitement of not knowing what lies ahead. Little can he imagine the horrors that await him in their destination, Gruhuken, a place that cannot escape the savage echo of its past.

FREE -- Savage Species -- Jonathan Janz/ Randy Hames --> 12.3 hrs/ R-3.4 --> horror

Quote:
Peaceful Valley is about to become a slaughterhouse!

Jesse thinks he’s caught a break when he, the girl of his dreams, and her friend are assigned by their newspaper to cover the opening weekend of the Peaceful Valley Nature Preserve, a sprawling, isolated state park. But the construction of the park has stirred an evil that has lain dormant for nearly a century, and the three young people—as well as every man, woman, and child unlucky enough to be attending the grand opening—are about to encounter the most horrific creatures to ever walk the earth. A species so ferocious that Peaceful Valley is about to be plunged into a nightmare of bloodshed and damnation.

$2.98 Whispersync Deal about Woman Who Hiked the 444-mile Natchez Trace!

The Natchez Trace . . . . I've driven on it many times, especially certain segments of it.

It follows, more-or-less closely, the path that people followed on the way home after riding down the Mississippi River on log rafts to Natchez, Mississippi (they sold the rafts there, for the logs that they were made from. Maybe people used the route after transporting some other stuff to Natchez that way, too, I dunno.)

The Trace is paved today, but very lightly traveled in most places. Part of the reason is a 50 mph or less speed limit the entire way (strictly enforced, although a local resident who travels it frequently told me that if you have your headlights on, park rangers won't stop you if you're doing 55 mph. ha). Nowadays, too, the road does not really go to and from places that people generally want to go to and from.

There are no billboards, no commercial advertising at all, along the Trace. And no commercial vehicles are allowed. It is, after all, a National Park, albeit a 444-mile long one!

There are all kinds of cool historical sites and natural attractions along the route. I'm sure that our author will tell us about some that she saw.

One thing that I've got to find out. The Trace is a narrow, two-lane road, with practically no shoulders in most places. It is not, and never was, designed to be a trail like the Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail. I rarely have seen anyone hiking on the Trace. I wonder how well hiking it worked out for the author.

I hope that you didn't mind me sharing some of my personal knowledge about this special road. Maybe it will lead you to buy the Whispersync deal . . . .

Be sure to read the "comments" below to see some of the many awards and honors that this book has received.

Book Description (Amazon):
Can an epic adventure succeed without a hero? Andra Watkins needed a wingman to help her become one of the only living persons to walk the historic 444-mile Natchez Trace as the pioneers did. She planned to walk fifteen miles a day. For thirty-four days. After striking-out with everyone in her life, she was left with her disinterested eighty-year-old father. And his gas. The sleep apnea machine and self-scratching. Sharing a bathroom with a man whose gut obliterated his aim. As Watkins trudged America's forgotten highway, she lost herself in despair and pain. Nothing happened according to plan, and her tenuous connection to her father started to unravel. Through arguments and laughter, tears and fried chicken, they fought to rebuild their relationship before it was too late. In Not Without My Father: One Woman's 444-Mile Walk of the Natchez Trace, Watkins invites readers to join her dysfunctional family adventure in a humorous and heartbreaking memoir that asks if one can really turn 'I wish I had' into 'I'm glad I did.'

Not into vampire books. But the guy, Vlad the Impaler, whom they are based upon is of great interest to me. He had Romanian connections, but his castle was in some little country whose name escapes me at the moment . . . .

He made vampires look like Sunday choir boys.

Oops. I'm not sure that all vampires were based on Vlad, but Dracula was.

I'm not really into vampires or zombies or other undead types, but I do love the real history behind the legends. Vlad was one brutal dude.

With the moniker "the Impaler," I think that that almost goes without saying.
