Good morning, everyone. The old is almost gone. The new set to start. Let's pray for a safe and saner new year. The staff in my building have been partying for the past two nights, having roped off the parking area and set up a stage, and their Karaoke can be heard into the wee hours. The Thais really do New Years well! I'm hoping for some good Fireworks displays from my windows tonight, and perhaps even a few good photos of the show. There should be thousands more khum loi (the hot air balloons) released over the city too. The police have blocked off all the U-turn lanes (where most of the traffic accidents seem to occur) and will have road-blocks set up everywhere looking to stop drunk drivers. There are LOTS of drunk drivers this time of year. Too many!

We're starting this Last Day of 2013 with a mug of East India Company's "Royal Blend" tea. We'll be drinking tea all day, and will stay off the roads. We really want to see 2014.

Hello, everyone. Yesterday was a truly awful day. Major hardware failure on the server that hosts all my test virtual machines for the book I'm working on. The good news is, nothing is lost that can't be rebuilt. The bad news is it takes TIME and that's something I'm in short supply of on this project.

I ended up buying a new, large, SSD to put in a laptop I've got that holds 16 GB of RAM and I'll turn it into a Server. It's a fairly silly server, but it should be adequate for the job and doing more than that is outside my budget right now. So today is being spent building that machine up. And trying to recover what I can of the failed machine. Fun, fun.

Sipping my first tea of the last day of 2013. My daughter will be carrying on a recent New Year's tradition of cooking dinner for all of us and having her best girlfriends (from 4th grade on) over for a sleepover. They're a good bunch so I don't mind surrendering the TV room to them.

Meanwhile, I'm very sure the weatherman didn't predict this snow!

Thanks, cromag and dreams. It was not a good day at all, I totally lost it. But today is better, even though it looks like I lost all the virtual machines on that thing. At least now I'm building the new server and slowly getting things back to working. Total cost of about 3 full work days, all told. But it's over now, and it's time to focus.

Good morning, everyone! Happy New Year 2014! It's a beautiful new beginning of a what will be a wonderful new year. The sun's up, there is brand new 'English Breakfast' tea from the Ving Joom On tea shop in my cup, and I've got 500+ images to process that I took at midnight while the entire sky, or at least the 180° of it that I could see was filled with what the Japanese call "fireflowers!" Thailand does it right when it comes to welcoming in the new year! Without fireworks ordinances, people were setting off displays all over the city at the same times. Beautiful to see!

Cinnamon Dulce Latte in my cup after a trip to town. After seeing all the crazies out there (before dinner), I am rethinking my plans to go out. I may just stay home and curl up with a blanket and watch movies to celebrate.

After a day of travel, discovery, and play with grandparents we all were in bed by 7:30 West Coast Time. Little Man is still asleep, 5 AM and I am going back to bed once I finish some business.
