And yes, not being able to get my purchases into my device would annoy me greatly. It's annoying enough that Amazon seem to think I don't want to see book's covers, but having them decide to brick the device to drive a new sale would be bad. DeDRM is kind of niche, but reading is why we own the things.

Yes, I got most of the books in from the Kindle itself, which seemed easier than the PC route. I presume that the DeDRMing only happens on import?

Here's the link to the alpha release which is the one you want. It has all of the latest code which 10.0.9 does not.

No, it seems to be only very old models.

I don't know the exact cutoff. Definitely forth generation and older. I am unsure about the fifth generation. Anything newer is probably safe for now.

I agree.

I have a K3 (Gen3), still getting purchases by WiFi a few days ago (azw3), and DXG was getting them via Cell (Gen2 though released same time, fallback to GSM-EDGE 2.5G, & old mobi)), the last time I tried. Covers etc in colour.

The PW3 has mostly only got KFX via WiFi for years (mono images). It's Gen7 (last update in 2023). The PW1 is gen 5 and PW2 is gen6. The Voyage was first 300 dpi and it along with a "Basic" was first gen7 (last update in 2021).

I totally agree with this. They won’t care until it affects them directly. They have no vision so they can’t imagine why this is terrible imo. They won’t even admit that all of this is anti-consumer.

Honestly I think most will just buy another Kindle. Several members have been switching to Kobo, but many end up coming back to Kindle. I would love for them to prove me wrong.

Random spots around the Internet. So far just a few mentions and nothing with any solid information such as specific dates. At this time, I tend towards the belief that most of these are paranoia after K4PC/K4Mac/K4A having older version limited to the publication date of books that can be downloaded. Until @jhowell also mentioned seeing some rumours, I hadn't taken them all that seriously. Now I find myself going "you will need at least 5.16.3 (10th gen and newer) to download new books from Amazon" just might have a kernel of truth.

Personally, I wouldn't hold off on replacing the battery. Cutting off free app versions when most people will be able to update the app is a rather mild public relations problem compared to the nightmare that cutting off devices that have no upgrade path would create.

Just curious, what is the main reason they come back to Kindle (if there is one)?

For anyone else who has received the email from Amazon about the end of downloads for earlier K4A versions, where did your email originate from? For some odd reason, my copy originated from Amazon.co.uk which I found a bit odd since I live in Canada.

I never got one even though I used K4A several times before. Maybe because I don't have Kindle device? Or maybe only recent usage?
