I just noticed that "Only Time Will Tell" by Jeffery Archer is free again over at Audible. Some of you may have gotten to for free last year when it was available. No idea how long it will be free so don't dawdle.

Quote:
From the internationally best-selling author of Kane and Abel and A Prisoner of Birth comes Only Time Will Tell, the first in an ambitious new series that tells the story of one family across generations, across oceans, from heartbreak to triumph.

The epic tale of Harry Clifton’s life begins in 1920, with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father, but he learns about life on the docks from his uncle, who expects Harry to join him at the shipyard once he's left school. But then an unexpected gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life is never the same.

As he enters into adulthood, Harry finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to a question: was he even his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who spent his whole life on the docks, or the firstborn son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line?

This introductory novel in Archer’s ambitious series The Clifton Chronicles includes a cast of colorful characters and takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford or join the navy and go to war with Hitler’s Germany.

From the docks of working-class England to the bustling streets of 1940 New York City, Only Time Will Tell takes listeners on a journey through to future volumes, which will bring to life 100 years of recent history to reveal a family story that neither the listener nor Harry Clifton himself could ever have imagined.
Enjoy!

Audible UK Daily Deal -- exp 27 Oct @ 11:59 PM BST

£1.99 -- NW -- Zadie Smith/ Karen Bryson, et al --> 11.0 hrs/ R-3.5 --> contemp

Quote:
Whispersync: no deals at this time

Shortlisted for: UK Author of the year - Specsavers National Book Awards 2012

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of NW, Zadie Smith's first novel since the best-selling On Beauty.

This is the story of a city. The north-west corner of a city. Here you'll find guests and hosts, those with power and those without it, people who live somewhere special and others who live nowhere at all. And many people in between. Every city is like this. Cheek-by-jowl living. Separate worlds. And then there are the visitations: the rare times a stranger crosses a threshold without permission or warning, causing a disruption in the whole system.

Like the April afternoon a woman came to Leah Hanwell's door, seeking help, disturbing the peace, forcing Leah out of her isolation....

Zadie Smith's brilliant tragi-comic new novel follows four Londoners - Leah, Natalie, Felix, and Nathan - as they try to make adult lives outside of Caldwell, the council estate of their childhood. From private houses to public parks, at work and at play, their London is a complicated place, as beautiful as it is brutal, where the thoroughfares hide the back alleys and taking the high road can sometimes lead you to a dead end. Depicting the modern urban zone - familiar to town-dwellers everywhere - Zadie Smith's NW is a quietly devastating novel of encounters, mercurial and vital, like the city itself.

OK, here's my conundrum (I'm not at that stage yet). When there are offers out there, is one better served by stretching one's membership to the last day before reverting to full price, or by quitting as soon as the last free credit has hit one's account?

The first option conceivably means you can be a member for a longer stretch, with access to all membership benefits. The second would keep you from missing out on a deal that might be cancelled prematurely or from being able to use up all the offers if they stack quickly with short expirations.

Obviously you quit as soon as possible when another deal is about to go off, but otherwise? I tend to go the prolongment route, just because I'm not confident that the current wealth of deals will continue indefinitely, but how about others?.

I always wait in case there are 2-for-1 deals, which usually aren't announced.

Unless there is a specific member benefit that I know I will want to avail myself of in the remainder of the month, I cancel immediately.
The main reason is that I have a history of forgetting, and getting charged, so I just want it out of the way and off my mind ASAP. That's just the habit I'd like reinforce.

As soon as the last credit posts to my account, I use it immediately and then cancel. I don't wait around for potential sales since I've never taken advantage of any of them. That way, if a new offer pops up, I can get it if I qualify.

At this point, I've used all of the offers out there that I'm aware of, so I no longer qualify for any of them. Additionally, I no longer get any enticements to stay when I start canceling. I've been made

Anyway, using credits is easy for me since I only use them for series. Right now, I'm working on Asimov's Foundation series (Robot, Empire, Foundation).

Whispersync: Audible ($3.49) | Kindle ($6.99)

Kira Miller is a brilliant scientist who discovers how to temporarily boost human IQ to dizzying levels. But this transcendent intelligence brings with it a ruthless megalomania. Determined to use her discovery to propel human civilization to a higher plane, despite this side effect, Kira and ex-special forces operative David Desh recruit a small group of accomplished scientists, all of whom are safely off the grid. Or so they think...

Soon Kira and her team are fighting for their lives against unknown but powerful adversaries. Worse still, while on the run and being relentlessly attacked from all quarters, Kira comes across evidence of savage acts that the enhanced version of Desh kept hidden, even from himself. Now both she and Desh must question everything they think they know. Can they trust each other? Can they even trust themselves?

And all the while, the greatest threat of all may be coming from an entirely unexpected direction. A threat that could lead to devastation on a global scale. And time is quickly running out...

Like its predecessor, Amped is a smart thriller crammed with breakneck action, unexpected twists, mind-blowing science, and philosophical and ethical concepts listeners will be contemplating long after they've finished listening.

Enter Dr. Corinna Newsam—an old professor of Charlotte’s—who’s convinced her son-in-law was murdered by her daughter’s new lover.

I'm going to cancel next month as soon as the second credit on my current promo hits, because I want to be sure I can take advantage of the next two offers (Groupon and HSN) before they expire. If there was no new promo on the table, I'd wait, just in case some great sale came along (even though I've rarely picked up anything from the sales).
